Do you like the acrobatic feats on Cirque de So-
leil? Do the high wire and tumbling acts of the circus
make your pulse beat faster? Perhaps you enjoy the gym-
nastic events of the Olympics. If so, you will love the
truly excellent performance of the Southwestern Adven-
tist University’s fine Acrobatic Team.
The Layland Museum has invited them to dem-
onstrate their skill on Thursday night, February 21, 2012,
at 7:00 p.m. at the Booker T. Washington Gym, at 100
Mansfield Road, Cleburne. The event is free to the pub-
lic, courtesy of the City and SWAU University.
Everyone is welcome to come, as all ages may enjoy their
performance.
Acrobatics, truly physical feats of balance, agil-
ity, and motor coordination, has been documented in Chi-
na over 2,000 years ago and shows up in Western Minoan
art from circa 2000 B.C., where acrobatic feats on the
backs of bulls are portrayed. Circuses of the 19th century
brought acrobatics to regular people.
This team is coached by Chad Hutchinson, a pro-
fessor of kinesiology at Southwestern Adventist. A grad-
uate of Tennessee’s Southern Adventist University, he has
directed the team for seven of the twenty years he has
coached acrobatics, basing many of the acts on Cirque de
Soleil.
Composed of freshmen, sophomores, juniors and
seniors at SWAU, most with extensive gymnastic experi-
ence, the 30 team members, 25 male and 5 female, come
from all over the United States. The girl’s captain ac-
tually comes from Canada. Their program is an active
outreach that integrates Christian witness with basic and
power tumbling, pyramid building and basket tossing
skills. The team, known as SVAT, tours locally, region-
ally, and nationally.
They have taken as their theme this year: Giving
Up to Go Up, meaning a person has to give up on every-
thing else in life for fulfillment in order to follow Christ.
The program on Thursday night, Feb. 16, will in-
clude group routines, individual routines, aero-acrobatics,
trampolining, teeter-boarding, and mixed pairs. This is
unique and may never be experienced here again. Check
them out on YouTube: Southwestern Acrobatic Team
SWAT] TCU Halftime, SWAU Acrofest 2010, SWAT
Mixed Pair.
