the shirts.”
Kari Denning, who teaches art at Smith and is a member of the Camp Fire board of directors,
said she is happy to have the original chicken caricature, which she designed, sharing shirt
space with her student’s creation.
“What he drew was really cute,” she said. “I asked him if we could use it, then I took it to the
committee in charge of the race. They gave it their approval, so this year, the Chicken Run
Chicken has a buddy.”
More than 300 participants are expected at this year’s event, which will mean a lot of children
and adults wearing Ulum’s artwork.
“Jacob definitely has talent,” Denning said. “He thinks like an artist. He’s very creative; he
thinks outside the box. He has enough natural talent and creativity that, with enough drive and
focus, he could receive a college scholarship.”
Denning says “street art” is where Ulum’s talents particularly shine.
“I let him decorate a blank shelf in my classroom with his work,” she said. “He is really great
at post-graffiti, which is being used a lot in contemporary public-space artwork.”
Ulum claims he is willing to draw anything, and also enjoys painting. What he has learned in
his first year of art makes him want to continue studying art in high school.
“It’s a class I love,” he said. “I’ve always liked drawing. This is definitely my favorite sub-
ject.”
And while he’s not definite on art as a career, he’s excited about what it has led to at this mo-
ment in time.
“I’m still young,” he said. “I’m still thinking about what I want to do in life. But this is a very
happy moment for me. It’s still pretty crazy.”

Four legendary cowboys all county residents recently participated in “Voices of Johnson
County,” a video project of the Johnson County Historical Commission. Pictured l to r:
Charlie Strickland, Jon Temple, Benny Earl Johnson and Bernis Johnson. These friends in
and away from rodeo shared their memories of working the rodeo circuit as young men and
into their adulthood. They reminisced about first meetings, good times and bad times, and
working the rodeos together.
“Mr. A.D. Wheat took us to A&M, Stephenville and all points in between in an old Ford
pickup in ‘55 while we were in Ag,” stated Jon Temple who graduated from Cleburne High
School in ‘56. “There was a canvas cover over the pickup bed. Seven of us rode in the back
no matter how bad the weather and two rode in front with Mr. Wheat. We won a lot of judg-
ing contests including the State chicken judging contest in 1955.”
“I remember the teams of horses on Market Square and my dad buying groceries at T. W.
Scott’s on the comer,” added Bernis.
“I got my first horse at the age of three and guess I’ve never been without a horse,” re-
marked Charlie Strickland. Charlie spent many years as a well respected pickup man for
the B-J Rodeo Company. Nobody could sit a horse like Charlie.
“There was this young boy who asked if he could stand nearby during a rodeo performance-
-he wanted to learn because he thought he might be a rodeo announcer some day,” shared
Benny Earl Johnson as he showed me a photo. “That young boy right there in the photo is
Charles Throckmorton.” Throckmorton continues to have a successful career as a rodeo
announcer and was inducted into the Texas Rodeo Cowboy Hall of Fame in 2007.
