John Ince, Assistant Chaplain/ member of Whitney
American Legion Post 522, Disabled Americans Vet-
erans, and Veterans of Foreign Wars organizations was
guest speaker at SER Fourth of July Celebration, Thurs-
day, June 27. John spoke to participants of SER, (Senior
Community Service Employment Program), on the
history of the American Legion and the significance of
the flag and the fourth of July. John gave a history of his
background in the military and triumphs from physical
limitations. John stressed the importance of education
and training as a means to keeping up with modem tech-
nology. A special thanks to Main Street Sonic and HEB
for their contribution to the picnic celebration.

and excited about things even at my age. So I turned his way
and quoted the words that are etched over the Field House

the fields of friendly strife are sown the seeds that on other
fields and other times will bear the seeds of victory”.
Even at the professional level of sports the team that has play-
ers that accept their role on the team and the discipline neces-
sary to compete has a chance at championships.
I understand that dedication can be found in many forms such
as in music, painting, singing and writing a book. I have al-
ways felt it is important to be a part of a team with a mature-
strong coach who leaves a lifetime mark on you and your

Pat Culpepper graduated and was co-captain of the 1958 State
Semi-Final Football Team and center fielder on the 1959 Yellow Jacket
Semi-Final Baseball Team. He graduated from the University of Texas in
1963 with honors, Academic All-American, Co-captain of the 1962 Texas
Longhorns SWC Championship Football Team. He was the Earl Blaik
Scholar Athlete Award winner and elected to “ the Longhorn Hall of Fame
in 1991
Pat has coached at the college level with University of Texas, Col-
orado, Tulane, Baylor and Memphis State and was head coach at North-
ern Illinois University; and coached in High School Football at Midland,
Lufkin, Galveston Ball, Westfield and Cleburne.
