Editorial —
By Linda WaHon
I read an article the other day
by G Kearme Keegan which, I
think, fits our school better now
as a whole than any thing else To
day 1 would like to present it to
you
A season comes each year for
focusing at') niton on the bii!
time sport of football, which we
are in the midst of right now Each
team goes to win The fan* in the
stands expect that; they pay their
money to see it However, too oft-
en today's question is not whether
a game is well played or whether
the team gives a good account of
itself Rather it is We didn't
win, what's wrong"""
In this age of spectator sports
we need to take an Inventory of
some basic attitudes, lest we de
generate into a nation of unsports
manlike critics.
Let us keep in mind the obvious,
it is impossible for both teams to
win the same game Someone must,
lose—will lose Here is an opport
unity to put good sportsmanship
into action. If our team wins, fine'
But it may be on the short end of
the score next Friday How will we
react then'
Teams «re composed of boys
coached by men They desire to
win, they work to win But many
factors contribute to possible de
feat Too frequently alumni and
,pe< tator-. are -o ' win crazy" that
■hey become cruel, ruthless, almost
inhuman to teams and their coach
es
Good sportsmanship is a pro
duct of good character, a mark of
maturity It is a player helping to
his feet an opponent whom he has
blocked out of a play It is ex
tending a handclasp of friend
•ship at the close of a hotly fought
contest It is giving a round of
applause for the opposition's go<xl
filay It is refusing to "ride" or
i the referee who calls a close
play against our team It. is spread
ing a good word of commendation
for our team even when losing be
cause we know it is doing its best.
These are the minimum tokens of
good sportsmanship
Why not take an inventory of
¡ our sportsmanship? As particip-
ants, whether players or spectators,
would we be eligible for good
sportsmanship awards7
