Facing Charges
BOSTON —UP— Rep. Thomas J.
Lane (D-Mass.), one time critic of
he U.S. Internal Revenue Depart-
ment’s investigation into tax de-
inquents, Tuesday faced charges
of tax evasion.
Lane was indicted by a federal
’rand jury here Monday on charges
if evading $38,543 in income taxes
from. 1949 through 1951. No date
was set for arraignment.
According to the indictment re-
‘urned by Federal Judge Charles
E. Wyzanski Jr., the evasions were
rommitted by filing “false and
fraudulent” joint tax returns.
The congressman’s wife, the for-
mer Jane R. Murphy of Lawrence,
was not named in the indictment.
The government alleged that
Lane paid taxes totaling $16,896
during the three-year period al-
hough he owed $55,440. The indict-
ment charged that Lane filed re-
urns showing income for the three
years as $66,259 when he “well
knew” the total was $151,166.
Justice Department officials said
the tax evasions resulted from the
congressman’s private law prac-
tice in Lawrence.
Three years ago Lane criticized
the internal revenue bureau’s Bos-
ton office for conducting a door-to-
loor canvass for delinquent tax-
payers.
Lane charged in August, 1953 that
the canvass was “unwarranted”
nd might constitute a “violation
of the sanctity of the home.”

WASHINGTON — UP—Sen. Wil-
liam Langer (R-N. D.) caused
some confusion Monday when he
made a barely audible request that
the Senate give its pages the rest
of the afternoon off.
Sen. Joseph C. O’Mahoney (D-
Wyo.) leaped up to object. He said
he thought the Senate should have
a quorum call instead to bring in
more member’s for the debate.
After a hurried huddle, the red-
faced O’Mahoney profusely with-
drew his objection. He said he had
thought Langer wanted to excuse
all senators for the afternoon in the
middle of debate on the farm, bill.

Burglary Ring
HOUSTON —UP— A teen-agers’
“club” where members went on a
beer binge after planning and car-
rying out burglaries was broken
up by police Monday night in
Houston’s swank River Oaks sec-
tion.
Police said all of the members—
16 of whom were arrested—were
teen-age youths of. good family.
Stolen goods, including a television
set and totaling about $1,200, were
recovered.
The loot included nine guns,
found later at the home of a 17-
year-old “organizer” of the club,
and silverware and clothing, and
an eight-gallon keg of beer ready
for serving to club members.
Police said four other youths—
17 to 18 years old—are being
sought.
Fifteen of the youths arrested at
the club are between 15 and 16
and all but three are students at
Lamar high school. Questioning of
one of the boys led to discovery
of the “club”—a $45 a month
apartment rented as a hideout and
for drinking parties.
Police said one of the boys, in
a written statement, said the club
was organized in January “so we
could hide from the law.” He
said the “business agenda” of
club meetings consisted of mem-
bers suggesting places to burglar-
ize.
Police released all the boys to
their parents with orders to ap-
pear later at the probation de-
partment.

DALLAS —UP— Three
pedestrians crossing a Dallas
street were hit Monday night by
an automobile which carried one
)f them 66 feet on its bumper and
then drove off.
The driver—a Dallas drive-in
grocery clerk—was arrested about
a mile and a half from the scene
after a motorist who had seen the
accident turned around and
chased him through three red
lights.
Police traffic sergeant F. J. Al-
exander, who arrested the driver,
said one of the pedestrians was
in critical condition with a brain
concussion, fractured skull, bro-
ken right arm and back and shoul-
der injuries.
Alexander said the driver had
been ticketed five hours before the
accident for negligent collision
after overturning his automobile.
Alexander said the man was
jailed after the second accident
for drunken driving, aggravated
assault with a motor vehicle and
failure to stop and render aid. He
told police he had stopped earlier
at a tavern and didn’t remember
what happened.
Alexander said witnesses re-
ported Isabel Rubajcado, 22, was
carried 66 feet on the bumper of
the car after it hit him and Reu-
fina Ruth Hamilton, 38, and Este-
bon Aguilar, 38, as they crossed
the street.
Witnesses said the driver then
backed up about 27 feet in an
apparent effort to dislodge Rubal-
2ado from the bumper. He then
sped off.
Mrs. Hamilton was thrown head
first through the windehi-’ nd
then flung clear of the car, as was
Aguilar, police said.
