Program has been com-
pleted for the 18th annual con.
ference of the Texas Asso-
ciation for the Improvement
of Reading to be held Thurs-
day and Friday (July 20-21)
at Stephen F. AustinStateUn-
iverslty.
Over 800 public school ad-
ministrators and teachers
from throughout Texas are
expected to attend the two-day
session.
Dr. John T. Thornton, asso-
ciate professor of elementary
education at SFA University,
is president of the state asso-
ciation.
Dr. H. Bennett Cook sey, pro-
fessor of elementary educa-
tion at SFA and Mr<. Vida
Jo Wooten, elementary school
supervisor in Tyler, are pro-
gram coordinators for the
conference.
Reading consultant and guest
speaker will be Dr. Wayne Ot-
to, professor of education, de-
partment of curriculum and
instruction, at the University
of Wisconsin.
Theme of the 1972 con-
ference is "I'd Like to Teach
the World to Read.'
Registration for the con-
ference begins at 8 a.m. July
20 in the Griffith Fine Arts
Auditorium on the SFA cam-
pus. First general session Is
scheduled at 9 a.m.

celving six weeks of practi-
cal work in military leader,
ship at the Army Reserve Of-
ficers* Training Corps Ad-
vanced Summer Camp at Ft,
Riley, Kan. from June 10-
July 21.
Cadet Owens, a 1970 grad-
uate of Stephen F. Austin
State University, Nacog-
doches, Tex., who is now at-
tending Louisiana State Uni-
versity, Baton Rouge, is one
of more than 10,000 students
attending Army ROTC Train-
ing at six installations in the
U.S,
The six-week ROTC Ad-
vanced camp provides an op-
portunity for cadets to de-
velop and demonstrate lead-
ership capabilities in a Held
training environment. The in-
struction supplements theo-
ries and comcepts which
cadets learned in the class-
room on campus.
Cadets normally attend the
training between their junior
and senior years. This ena-
bles them to better compre-
hend their final year of
classroom work and to func-
tion as cadet leaders on cam-
pus.
