THE FOLLOWING MERCHANTS URGE YOU TO GO TO CHURCH
W eekly Devotional
The Example of the Cross
The songwriter asks, "Were you
there when they crucified my
Lord?" This hymn is intended to
involve all who hear it in the
crucifiction of Jesus.
Hundreds of years before Christ
was born, Isaiah the prophet wrote
of the one who"would be "wounded
for our transgressions" and
"bruised for our iniquities" (Is.
53:1-9). Jesus knew that he was to
fulfill this role of the Suffering
Servant. He often warned his
disciples of the cruel deaths which
he would face in Jerusalem (Matt.
16:21). So the cross was not an
unfortunate roadblock in the life of
Jesus; he came to die!
We are familiar with the
redemption made possible through
his death. We are ever grateful for
the forgiveness and new life which
the cross brings. But I wonder jf we
understand that the cross i^also an
example for us. The earliest
Christians knew what it was to be
persecuted because of their faith.
Even today it can be a very
unpopular, even dangerous, thing
to be a Christian. Peter offers
words of comfort to all suffering
Christians, "Christ also suffered fo
you, leaving you an example, that
you should follow in his steps." (I
Pet. 2:21).
But more than that, the cross is
an example of the extent to which
we are called upon to love. Love is
central to the Christian religion
because it is central to the nature
of God. Christ on the cross defines
what love is all about. Do we ever
wonder how forgiving we should
be? Are we concerned about our
willingness to serve? The cross
reminds us that there is no length
to which love will not go.
However, it is not necessarily
true that the cross will inspire all
people by its example. For every
soldier at the cross who said,
"Truly this was the Son of God"
there was a dozen who were only
interested in winning his robe by a
lucky throw of the dice. We can
also refuse to love. We can say,
"I'm not impressed. That lifestyle
is not for me." And there are some
who have said just that. But for
those who have accepted Jesus,
the cross means more than
redemption, it is an example of
suffering love.
Don Kleppe
I saw God wash the
world last night.
Ahv would He had washed me
As clean of all my
dust and dirt
As that old white birch tree.
