Flash flooding and hail
last Thursday and Friday
did considerable agricul-
tural and public damage in
parts of Cherokee County.
The flash flooding and
hail in tbe Rusk area on
Thursday left some farm
pond dams broken, culti-
vated fields packed and
gullied, and some crops
destroyed that were al-
ready up Then on Friday,
a smaller amount of rain
and hail damaged some
crops in the Alto area.
There may have been other
areas damaged also, since
these clouds seemed to be
spotty in nature. For
instance, w e had reports of
over 6 inches of rain north
of Risk and 1.6 inches near
Alto on Thursday and only
.3 inches at Atoy. Most of
tbe hail came in the Rusk
area on Thursday; but on
Friday, the Alto area was
hit heavier.
It would be difficult to
estimate accurrately at the
present the dollar damage
done to agriculture in the
county; but many produ-
cers will have to replant
tomatoes, corn, and gar-
dens. In some cases land
will have to be prepared
again. Also, where some of
tbe heavy rain fell,
refertilization may be
necessary due to leaching
and washing away of
fertilizer.
According to Bill Paul,
president of the Cherokee
County Stock Show and
Exposition Inc., a joint
meeting of the Board and
tbe Jr. Livestock Show
committee will be held
Thursday at 7:00 p.m. in
tbe First National Bank in
Jacksonville Among other
items of business, the
group will evaluate the Jr.
Livestock show held March
19 and assess suggestions
and ideas concerning next
year's show .
I'm sure they will also be
talking about site selection
for next year's show, since
many have expressed a
desire to have permanent
show facilities built by next
year
