Scouts Win A Second Place

Scouts Share Trip g
Take Second Place
Some of the Rusk's Boy
Scout Troop 323 shared a
trip to Galveston last week-
end. They are T.J. Hunter,
Frank Pirtle, Randy
Stover, Jay Jackson and
Steve Reese. They were ac-
companied by Scout Lea-
ders Jack Pirtle and Kirk
Hunter. Travis McCain
provided transportation
with his van, accompanied
by his daughter, Torri.
The group saw the Good-
year Blimp, took a ferry
ride and toured the Sea-A-
Rama Marine World at
Galveston.
They spent Friday night
at First United Methodist
Church Fellowship Hall,
sponsors of the troop. After
arriving in Galveston, they
participated in a Campo-
ree, winning a second place
for competition in Scout
Skills. Approximately 300
Scouts entered.
The group spent the night
in tents at Marine World
and returned at noon Sun-
day.
Another event planned
Mar. 3-4 is the Camporee
for the Thunderbird Dis-
trict at I D. Fairchild State
Forest. Scouts from Chero-
kee and Anderson counties
will participate.

Rusk Police Department
A Rusk man was shot last Thursday and his son was
incarcerated in the Cherokee County Jail in connection with
the domestic fray.
Prester Tillev, 46, of Rusk was shot in the hip when he and
his son, Melvin, 18, became involved in a family argument.
The young man is believed to have shot his father with a
small caliber pistol The elder Tilley is recovering from the
shooting at Rusk Memorial Hospital.
The younger Tilley was later arrested at Nan Travis
Hospital in Jacksonville while he was visiting his mother, a
patient at the hospital. Jacksonville police officers Dane and
Avera made the arrest two hours after the incident and
transported Tilley to the Cherokee County Jail in Rusk.
Justice of the Peace Abner Webb set Melvin Tilley's bond.
A two month investigation by the Rusk Police Department
has resulted in the arrest of Roy Lynn Thompson of
Grapevine and Memphis Tennessee Lowe of Rusk for their
alleged connection with the theft of two 18-wheelers from
Dallas and Tyler
The two men were arrested last Thursday and Precinct 1
Justice of the Peace Abner Webb set Thompson's bond at
$50,000 and Lowe's bond at $30.000.
Rusk PD Chief Bill Garner stated that the two men had
allegedly stolen the trucks, stripped them down in woods
outside Rusk and sold their parts in West Texas. Chief
Garner and Patrolman Billy Don Garner conducted the
investigation assisted by the Sheriff's Office personnel and
Constable Billy Lovelady.
Chief B.D. Garner reports the city police arrested three
people over the weekend. Two people were arrested for
fleeing from an officer and another individual was arrested
for public intoxication. The three people were taken to the
Cherokee County Jail where they were booked and later
made bond and were released.

reporting gross sales dur-
ing the third quarter (July,
August and September) to
Bob Bullock, state comp-
troller.
Cherokee County's gross
sales for the quarter was
$61,804,026 with 643 outlets
reporting around the
county. Gross taxable sales
was $32,507.429 with the
total amount subject to tax
being $17,392,499
Nearby Anderson County
with 579 outlets reported
gross sales of $65,251,271
with gross taxable sales at
$31.255,514 Total amount
subject to tax was
$20,506,366.
Houston County to the
south had 279 outlets and
noted gross sales of
$24,525,772 with gross tax-
able sales of $14,556,927.
Total amount subject to tax
was $7,352,226.
With 793 outlets Nacog-
doches County had gross
sales of $77,083,286 with
gross taxable sales of
$46.522,264 Total amount
subject to tax was
$28.096,838.
Smith County with 2,330
outlets had a gross sales of
$302.082.992 with gross tax-
able sales at $160,154.530.
Total amount subject to tax
was $108,204,551.
Angelina County with
1,005 outlets reported gross
sales of $215,963,780 and
gross taxable sales of
$150,670,418. Total amount
subject to tax was
$47,178,212.
Rusk County with 670
outlets had gross sales of
$55,936,371 with gross tax-
able sales of $34,981,506 and
amount subject to tax at
$17,634,213
Harris County led the
state in gross sales for the
third quarter with a total of
$10 3 billion, up 20 2 percent
over the same period of
1976. Gross sales in Dallas
County for the third quar-
ter totalled $6.4 billion,
while Tarrant County
recorded $2.5 billion and
Bexar County $1.9 billion.
Bullock noted that repor-
ted gross sales in Texas for
the third quarter of 1977
totalled $41.4 billion, a 20
percent increase over the
same three-month period
the previous year. The
third quarter figures are
based on reports filed by
some 245,000 business out-
lets
