— and will be among the 30
million nationally who will
b4 honored on Veterans
Day next November 11.
There now is an average
of nearly 12 veterans in
Texas among every 100
residents. Further, about
41 percent of the Texas
population is affected
directly oY indirectly by
VA's benefits, including
medical programs.
The Texas veteran
population breakdown,
based on VA Office of
Reports and Statistics
totals: 1.41 million war
veterans from World War I
through the Vietnam era
ending May 7, 1975 ; 529,000
Vietnam era, including
32,000 with Korean conflict
service; 307,000 Korean
conflict, including 72,000
with World War II service;
662,000 WWII, 21,000 WWI;
one Spanish-American War
veteran on VA rolls; 168,000
with service between the
Korean conflict and the
Vietnam era, and 75,000
post-Vietnam era.
Although a state break-
down of veteran age
averages by service
periods isn't available, the
national averages (with
total veterans in brackets)
are: War veterans, 50.2
years old (25.6 million);
Vietnam era, 34.8 (9.11
million); Korean conflict,
51.6 (5.75 million); WWII,

The Obstetrics Depar-
tment of Nan Travis
Memorial Hospital is
reflecting the national
trend toward family-
centered births. The
hospital announces the ad-
dition of a Birthing Room
to the obstetrics wing. The
former labor room has
been refurbished with wall
paper, a Borning Birthing
Bed, chest of drawers,
night stand, chair and table
lamp. The Birthing Room
offers a home-like en-
vironment within the
hospital maternity unit
with immediate access to
emergency equipment.
Both labor and delivery are
completed in the one room.
- Several area couples
have already used the Bir-
thing Room. All seem to
agree that it personalizes
the birth experience and is
a safe and acceptable
alternative to traditional
hospital births or to home
births. Families choosing
to use the Birthing Room
attend the Prepared Child-
birth Classes offered at the
hospital.
Nan Travis also now of-
fers "Rooming-in" for in-
terested parents. This
policy gives the mother the
option of keeping her baby
in the room with her bet-
ween the hours of 9 a.m.
and 6:30 p.m. The father,
or one other designated
person, is not considered a
visitor and may stay with
the mother and baby. The
infant is returned to the

Fire
Damages
Home
Fire damages totaling
between $300 and $400 at
the Joe Bob Moore home on
Route 3, Rusk, has been
reported by Rusk Fire
Marshal Johnny Stover.
Stover said the fire at
7:05 p.m. Thursday started
from the fireplace.
Snug and warm.
Next time winter winds blow,
notice the most comfortable homes
in your neighborhood. You can be
sure those families use a natural
gas heating system.
And for all the right reasons.
A gas heating system is an out-
standing money saver compared
to an electric system. That's be-
cause gas heating uses primary
energy two and a half times as
efficiently. And it's more depend-
able, too. Which is why natural
gas heating gives the best homes
a warm feeling all over.
