Mistletoe
Mistletoe—Just hearing
that word at Christmas
raises en eyebrow on any
old Scrooge and to most of
us it brings a twinkle in the
eye, a smile, or even a big
grin. Most folks are
familiar with the holiday
customs associated with
mistletoe but not so with
the plant.
Mistletoe is a parasitic
plant that can be found
throughout East Texas. It
is frequently seen growing
in the upper limbs of hack-
berry and oak trees. Of
¿ourse, it grows in many
other trees as well. It

depends on its host for
water and dissolved
minerals.
The mistletoe species
most commonly found in
Texas produces clusters of
perennial green jointed
stems on the branches and
trunks of the host tree. The
stems bear green leathery
leaves which persist for
several seasons. The stems
bear green leathery leaves
which persist for several
seasons. Nutrients and
water are supplied from an
absorbing system which
develops in the bark and
wood of the host plant.
Flowers are born in the leaf
axis and produce the
familiar translucent white
berries in late fall and win-
ter. These berries are very
poisonous and this fact
should be kept in mind
when decorating with
mistletoe.
Mistletoe sometimes
becomes so abundant in
trees that control measures
are needed. Temporary
control can be obtained by
merely breaking off the
parasite. However, it will
eventually grow back.
More lasting control can be
obtained by removing the
limbs on which the
mistletow is growing. At
present there is no
chemical control that will
not do excessive harm to
the host tree.
In summary, enjoy
being caught under the
mistletoe, keep the
poisonous berries out of
children's reach, and have
a Merry Christmas.

Here are some ideas for

Claus can come.

the kids can have some
toys.

Pruning time is at hand.
Shears, lobbers, and tree
trimmers would be put to
good use. Electric hedge
trimmers or any of the new
time and work saving cor-
dless lawn equipment
would be welcome.
Poinsettias, kalanchoe,
and Christmas cactus
make beautiful gifts. You
can even leave the wrap-
ping and delivery to your
florist.
It's time to plant fruit
trees and landscape plants.
You might consider a
pecan or fruit tree as a gift.
If you're shorter on cash
than you are on energy,
why not wrap a certificate
that simply states, "I
promise to cultivate the
vegetable garden, I'll
water the lawn six times,
or This is good for two lawn
mowings and edgings."
This is low cost and is cer-
tain to be appreciated.
To seek the meaning of Christmas
is to find its lasting peace!
