JUST THINKING
By REV. T. T. NEWTON
“And also I have withholden the
rain from you, when there was
yet three months to the harvest;
and I caused it to rain upon one
city, and caused it not to rain
upon another city; one piece was
rained upon, and the piece where-
upon it rained not withered."—
Amos 4:11.
Drought, what a saddening, de-
pressing word. Yet, that is what
we are experiencing. Some would
say, "well, when the wind gets
right, it will rain. Or when cer-
tain other conditions prevail, it
will come, it always has.” But
who is the Master of the winds
and the waves? Who set the earth
in motion? Who manufactures
water? Only the God of Creation.
Hence, He has the power and the
wisdom to perform that task of
rainmaking. But, it is the ten-
dency of man to try everything
else first. God is the last resort.
If we can do things without God
we think we are making real
progress.
God's charge against Israel was
that the people had forgotten Him
and turned unto their own way
of life. Thus, God announced that
He had withheld the rain because
Israel had not returned unto Him.
Elijah prayer that rain should
not fall and for the space of three
and one-half years there was no
rain. The people were brought to
a state of famine. Elijah prayed
for rain and the refreshing rains
came. But there was a cause for
this. The people had been in a
spiritual drought for a long, long
time. Thus, God demonstrated
that He was still the "boss" of
the material as well as over the
spiritual realms.
This may be the predicament
into which we have led ourselves.
God is under no obligation to
bless us whether or no. Sometimes
God withholds things from us to
emphasize his rulership. At other
times He sends the diseases
storm, earthquake, etc., to let us
know His sovereignty. God’s wrath
is a counterpart of His righteous-
ness, love and mercy. In order to
be just He must exercise His jus-
tice.
Can and will God change the
situation? Most assuredly. When
will He do it? “If my people,
who are called by my name, shall
humble themselves, and pray, and
seek my face, and turn from their
wicked ways; then will I hear
from heaven, and will forgive
their sin, and will heal their
land.”—II Chronicles 7:14. “If ye :
ask anything in my Name, I will
do it,” said Jesus.

revival services Friday night, ’
