If you already have central air conditioning, regardless of the brand,
you II probably just need a new condensing unit. If you have central heat-
ing, you ll need the condensing unit, a thermostat control and an inside
expansion coil, which, of course, will raise the total cost. If you don’t have
central heating, you ll need the above units plus ductwork at additional cost
lonies before 1730.

Used I ome May
Be Best Buy
For Families
The current shortage of new hous-
es, rising prices and mounting inter-
est rates makes used homes popular
and in demand. A used home might
well be your best buy, points out an
extension housing specialist, if you
know precisely for what you're look-
ing.
Deciding whether a used house is
in a suitable location or if it is de-
signed to meet the space needs of
your family is easy. But can you
judge a used house for structural
soundness, adequacy of plumbing and
electrical system, condition of foun-
dation, presence of termites and oth-
er features to help make a good
choice.
Few people are adequately
equipped for the job, says Mrs. Jane
Berry, so to assist the prospective
home buyer in checking a used house
a relatively new profession has been
formed, the home inspection consul-
tant.
He is a trained professional, usu-
ally a registered architect or engi-
neer, who for a nominal fee, makes
an independent, unbiased report on
the structural, mechanical and oth-
er important features of a house.
The inspection report is not an ap-
praisal of the property, nor does it
make recommendations for the client
to buy or withdraw, explains the spe-
cialist.
Items included in the inspection
vary with the organizations, says
Mrs. Berry, but most inspection lists
include several hundred items Most
include foundation, site drainage, ter-
mites, plumbing, electrical supply,
heating ard hot water systems, down-
spouts and gutters, chimney, all fix-
ture inside and outside masonry
