The possibility of a
consolidation of the Canton
and Martins Mill schools was
discussed at the school board,
Tuesday night. In fact A. D.
Whitaker, superintendent of
schools, said County Judge
Richard Ray has already set
the election date for June 24.
Canton will also have to
vote to accept Martins Mill
into the district.
Dr. Dan Hilliard said he
was approached on the
possibility of the consolidation
recently, and it appeared that
ones who talked with him
expressed their desires to
either consolidate with
Canton or Van.
Mr. Whitaker said that 110
students from Martins Mill
are already attending the
local schools as transfer
students, with no tuition fees.
The Canton schools do receive
ADA money from the state,
however.
Dr. Hilliard made it clear
that Canton ISD is not
attempting to get the students
away from the school in any
attempt to close the school or
Rumor Spreads
On Edom Box
Rumor has spread
throughout the area that
certain discrepancies existed
in the Edom box at the time of
the election Saturday night
and Sunday morning.
In discussing the matter
with some Edom people, who
asked to remain anonymous,
the main complaint seemed to
be the time element in getting
the precinct box returns to the
primary headquarters. The
box which contained 475 votes
arrived at 8 a.m. on Sunday
morning according to Bill
