Some millions of American
males along with more than a few
females — are taking to the woods
this fall, firearms in hand, in search
of live targets.
These are the hunters among us
The American Medical Associa-
tion has a note of caution for those
who are planning a fall safari into
the fields and woods in search of
birds, small animals, deer and other
game
Before you pull the trigger, Know
what you're firing at.
The hunter who blazes away at
everything that moves is a highly
dangerous animal His quarry
might well be another hunter
Each year several hundred hun
lers return from fall outings via
hearse. Thousands of others return
with a load of bird shot or a rifle
bullet to be dug out Behind almost
every hunting accident is one cause
carelessness.
Never cross over or through a
fence or climb a tree with, a loaded
gun. It might fall and discharge.
Unload first and reload after cross-
ing. Don't shoot at a hard, flat sur
face. Glancing bullets can cany
long distances.
Even a small bore rifle has con-
siderable range. Know where your
bullet will stop before pulling the

use. Mr. Faulker then dug the
present well, which was in
operations when he deeded
the water rights to the City of
Ca nton.
Mr. Faulkner obtained
money to dig the second well
by accepting donations of not
more than $10 apiece from the
public, refusing to accept
any from retired persons or
widows. He wanted all to
share in the free water in the
hope that it would help to
relieve some of the suffering
of mankind.
The latest development in
the situation is a new sign
erected at the site last week
which has raised the price of
the water from 10c to 20c a
gallon. It states that it is
being placed on the honor
system in order to keep from
having to hire an attendant to
be on duty or put in a meter
system, and further gives the
address where to send the
payment.
A “For Sale" sign has also
been posted on the property.

Dissatisfied Citizens
• “The citizens of Texas want
stronger measures to be taken
in dealing with criminals,”
according to Dr. Raymond
Teske, Jr., a social scientist
at Sam Houston State Univer-
sity in Huntsville.
Teske is director of the
Texas Crime Poll conducted
by the University’s Criminal
Justice Center. Teske’s com-
ments were prompted by
responses to a recent
questionnaire mailed to 1,000
Texas residents. One of the
questions was:
“If a person is out of jail for
a serious (felony) offense and
that person is arrested for
another serious offense,
should he/she be allowed to
bond out of jail for the second
People Urged
To Lock Homes
The Canton Police
Department is urging
everyone to lock their
houses, which includes
the doors and windows,
when they leave. Even if
one goes outside for just a
few minutes, to run to the
store or rake leaves, etc.,
be sure and lock the
house.
There has been a rash
of burglaries in the last
several months and there
is expected to be many
more between now and
Christmas. The number •
of burglaries usually
increases near Christmas
time.
Everyone is asked to
r eport anything
suspicious immediately.
Do not wait a few minutes
or a few days, but call
immediately. Also put
identifying marks on
everything This includes
televisions, radios, and
guns. Also keep a list of
the serial numbers of the
items in the house.

“With improved livestock
prices this year, particularly
cattle, we are optimistic that
1978 cash receipts will be
higher,’’ commented
Agriculture Commissioner
Reagan V. Brown. “These
figures only half of the
story, however. In any
d i s c u s sion in c luding
agricultural statistics, the
true picture is only presented
when you can balance the
cash receipts against the ac-
tual production costs. During
last year, unfortunately, those
production costs outstripped
most of the profit margin for
many farmers and ranchers.
Texas maintained its third
place national ranking in cash
receipts, despite problems
throughout the year. Other
first place rankings included:
number of cattle and calves.
14.5 million head; Upland cot-
ton production, 5.5 million
bales; wool production, 21
million pounds; mohair
production, 8 million pounds;
number of farms and ranches,
197,000; and farm and ranch
land, 139.8 million acres.
The state ranked second in
the production of grain
sorghum, grapefruit, can-
taloups, carrots, rice, green
peppers, cabbage, onions,

An almost unanimous 96%
of the 642 persons who respon-
ded to the survey said “No.”
Respondents were also
asked to evaluate the overall
court system. The question
asked was: “In general, when
dealing with convicted
criminals, do you feel the
courts are: (a) doing a good
job; (b) too easy; or, (3) too
harsh.”
Three-fourths (75%) said
that the courts are too easy,
only 18% said that the courts
are doing a good job, and 2%
said that the courts are too
harsh.
Another question concerned
treatment of victims and
defendants. “Do you feel that
most victims of crimes are
treated fairly bv the criminal
justice system?” respondents
were asked. Almost two-
thirds (62%) replied “no” and
