Yuletide Melodies
In this century, hymns and
carols of the Nativity have
been composed by Peter War-

and Gustav Holst (’’Mid-Win-

Often, hymns and carols
have ben set to the music

We think Diane Price’s gift
to Sue and Sonny Huddle had
an ulterior motive... Diane is
famous for adopting stray
animals and last week she
found a gray kitten that
someone had abandoned . . .
with the pet menagerie that
the Price household has now,
she knew she would have to
find another home for it, (or
leave home herself), so she
baked a basket of Christmas
goodies and had them
delivered to the Huddle home,
along with the kitten, all
wrapped up with a big red
bow. How could Sue and
Sonny aaccept the goodies
and refuse the kitten? Of
course, they couldn’t, so now
they are proud owners of a
sweet little gray kitten.

Canton Lion’s Club mem-

that it’s better to give than to
Canton Historical Society members recently sponsored the
refurnishing of the arch over the entrance to Hillcrest
Cemetery.
Hillcrest
Arch Redone
If you have passed Hillcrest
Cemetery lately, you may
have seen the new work that
has been done on the arch
over the entrance. This work
was sponsored by the Canton
Historical Society. David
Wren has learned how the
arch originated and an in-
teresting history about the
club that sponsored it.
This was a Canton garden
club, know as the “Iris Gar-
den Club” with a large mem-
bership in the thirties. Mrs.
Sam Beard, a member, has
furnished a yearbook giving
the names of the officers
during 1938. They were: Mrs.
Paul Stanford, President;
Albert Travis,
President; B. D.
Secretary-treasurer;
“The successful people are
I the ones who can think up
I things for the rest of the world
| to keep busy at.”

of the glories of that first Christmas
night, making our hopes brighter.
and C. A. Groves, Cemetery
Chairman.
The club purchased me
arch from the Texas Military
College of Terrell. The name
was chosen from suggestions
handed in by the members.
The name “Hillcrest” was
handed in by Mrs. Stanford.
With the help of the county
judge, at that time, Judge E.
C. Stovall, and the co-
operation of local merchants,
the club built three brick en-
trances, the driveways, new
plantings, and started the
move for water to be piped
into the Cemetery.
This club was part of a
county unit; with similar
clubs in each of the towns.
Because of gas rationing, due
to the war, the Canton club
disbanded about 1941.

The spirit of Christmas
giving is abundant this year;
just a few instances come to
mind .. . Alice Todd was nice
enough to give the Canton
Herald Staff something to
decorate our office, a
beautiful hand crocheted
Christmas card holder . . .
Alice, we’ve certainly had a
s , lot of compliments on it, and
. . we. just thought you would like
to know your work was ap-
preciated.
