RHS Graduate Returns
From Trip Abroad To Spain
Stacy Southerland, a Rusk High
School graduate, now a Stephen F.
Austin University senior, has
returned from a six study trip to
Spain.
Miss Southerland, daughter of
Prank and Kathy Southerland of
Alto, attended classes this summer
at the Institute of Spanish Studies at
Balencia, Spain. At Stephen F.
Austin University, she is seeking a
degree with a major in Spanish and
a minor in music.
While in Spain, she attended
classes for three courses. However,
she will only receive three hours of
credit for this work on her degree.
Classes at the Spanish school are
somewhat shorter than those here
in the United States.
The school made arrangements
for her room and board with a
Spanish family. Also, staying in the
home were the secretary of the
school and a girl from New York
and another girl from Canada. Miss
Southerland says the girl from New
York had as many questions about
Texas as anyone she met. One of the
quesions, the New Yorker asked
was "are there any trees in
Texas?"
Only Spanish was spoken in the
home. Everyone lives in apartmen-
ts and this home was on the fourth
floor. The home had no air con-

ditioning, as electricity is very ex-
pensive. "And, it was hot!" she
said.
Her visit in Spain was quite in-
teresting, she says Miss
Southerland plans to go back for
additional studies during the time
she is working on her masters
degree. She will attend Indiana
University for graduate work. That
school has good language and
music departments, according to
Miss Southerland.
Probably the best friend she had
in Spain was a girl who she met at
the school This Spanish young
woman and her brother took Miss
Southerland out almost every
evening. Young people in Spain
gather in the evenings at a cafe. Ac-
tivities really begin around 11 a.m.
and continue to around 2 a.m.
The big fair was underway when
she arrived in Spain. A Battle of the
Flowers parade closed out the fair.
As the floats in the parade passed
the people threw flowers at the ones
they liked, she explained
She says she saw a ballet, a bull
fight, visited the large museums,
the Royal Palace, an ancient
Roman theatre in the rocks and
many other interesting sights. Each
street in the city has it own dances
at night. One night, they even had a
play, she said. Miss Southerland at-
tended a concert in a large stadium
during her visit. The popular
Spanish singer sang songs of Spain
and its government The music was
of a pop nature, she said
Food in Spain was good The
mother of the family where she
stayed was a "good cook." The
family ate the paella -a rice, meat
and vegetable dish often This is one
of the more popular Spanish dishes.
However, she says, she was
discouraged from eating meats in-
the restaurants and she always
drank bottled water because water
there is so hard. She registered last
week at SFA. as she returns to life
at an American University
