from work. The clothes for the four-
year-old were found at the water
edge.

County agriculture income up,
says County Agent Jack White
JACK L.WHITE
County Extension Agent-AG
The estimated gross income for
agricultural products produced in
Cherokee County is up. according to
County Extension Agent Jack
White
Estimated income for 1987 ex-
ceeded 70 million dollars, stated
White This is about a 10 percent in-
creaseover 1986figures
The Texas Agricultural Extension
Service in cooperation with
agricultural producers across the
state prepare this estimate each
year White was quick to point out
that these totals are gross income
estimates and not net income
figures
Agricultural producers spend
millions of dollars annually for the
inputs necessary to produce their
products From an economic per-
spective. this is good for the area
economy, stated White As these
dollars move through the local
economy, they multiply itself seven
times before it leaves. Assuming
that is the case, agriculture will im-
pact the economy of Cherokee Coun-
ty to the tune of almost a half billion
dollars That makes agriculture and
agricultural producers extremely
valuable to Cherokee County, poin-
ted out White.
Major contributions to the in-
crease this year included expansion
in thedairv industrv. increased har-
vests and improved prices in the
timber industry, and improved
prices in the beef industry in the lat-
ter part of the year.
Weather contributed in a positive
manner in most enterprises in 1987.
However a late freeze wiped out
most of the peach crop and much of
the pecan production. Hay produc-
tion was also hampered due to
weather, although quality of hay
produced was above average.
In recent times when economic
development has been the by-word
and the state economy unstable,
agriculture has served Cherokee
County well as a buffer for the
present and promise for the future,
added White.
