Grand champion steer brings $2,500 to Wells 4-Her
A 1,125 pound slaughter steer en-
tered by Jeana Hopper of Wells took
grand champion honors Saturday
evening at the Cherokee County
Junior Livestock Show. The steer
showed by the 15-year-old Miss
Hopper brought $2,587.50 in the an-
nual auction. Michael Davis and
Audry Owens of Tri-County
Livestock Market at New Summer-
field were high bidders with a bid of
$2.30 per pound.
Miss Hopper is the daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. David Hopper. She is
a member of the Wells 4-H Club.
Spencer Smith's market barrow
was named grand champion in the
swine division. He is a member of
the Alto FFA.
Cody Hague of Pinetree 4-H had
the grand champion slaughter
heifer. Other grand champions
were Phill Goodwin, Jacksonville
FFA, commercial cow; Michelle
Williams Wells 4-H, commercial
heifer; Heather Glover, Wells 4-H
feeder steer; Kim Grayson, Wells

Sheriff s Report
Cherokee County Sheriff Jimmy
Dickson reported that during the
period of March 12 and March 18,
1989, the Cherokee County Sheriff's
Department answered 113 calls and
filed 27 Offense reports. Offenses
reported were: four criminal
mischief, six burglary of
habitation, five assaults, one
burglary of vehicle, one enticing a
child, two burglary of building, one
dog bite report, two theft, one
telephone harassment and four
unauthorized use of motor vehicle.
Sheriff Dickson stated that Terry
A. Watkins, a CPA from
Nacogdoches, has been arrested for
murder in connection with the mur-
der of Jackie Hicks of Alto. This
murder occurred on March U, 1989.
Watkins' bond has been set at
$100,000. Watkins was the CPA for
Jackie Hicks. He was arrested in
Houston, Texas, after the Cherokee
County Sheriff's Department
received a tip on his location and
called Houston Police Department.
This investigation is continuing.
According to Sheriff Dickson, he
has two officers assigned to this
case, working with Constable Chris
Parsons and the Cherokee County
District Attorney's Office.
