Kevin Mullins, Mangus Rosen,
Mark Platt, and Mark Bennett rep-
resented the St. Edward’s tennis
team April 19th and 20th in the Big
State Conference tournament held
in Beaumont. Mullins and Rosen
combined their talents to win the
doubles’ title while Bennett and Ro-
sen were to have faced each other
for the singles title earlier this week.
Each player was placed in a divi-
sion according to his ranking on the
team. Mullins played in the first di-
vision, Rosen in the second, Platt in
Coach Emmett Strohmeyer said
his players, “played spectacularly
in singles and doubles.” He noted
the move of the tournament from
the outdoor surface to indoor con-
crete courts, but said the change
didn’t seem to bother the players.

The leading golfer for the SEU
team was freshman Joe Beck, who
shot a 75 on the first day of play and
a 77 on the second for a tournament
score of 152. Following Beck was
sophomore Gary Thompson with a
156 total, shooting a 79 and a 77.

the third, and Bennett in the fourth.
In each division, the men played
three matches, then were paired
against another division winner.
The pairings of Divisions LIV
put Mullins and Bennett against
each other while Rosen opposed the
Division III winner. This winner
achieved his position due to the de-
fault of Platt who was injured and
unable to continue play.
In the Mullins-Bennett match-up,
Bennett came out ahead with scores
of 2-6, 6-3, 6-2. Rosen upset his East
Earlier this week, the SEU team
was also to have played Southwest
Texas State for a chance to go to the
national competition.

SEU baseball started into the fi-
nal drive of the season, winning
three games this past week while
dropping none.
The week started off on a good
note as pitcher Richard Schacherl
went the distance on Tuesday, April
20, to down St. Mary’s 4-2. Scha-
cherl surrendered nine hits and eight
walks, but managed to work his way
out of trouble with some clutch
pitching.
Defensively, the Toppers made
some fine plays to aid the cause.
Right fielder Greg Galle pegged two
of the Rattler’s runners at home
plate. First baseman Jeff Ganske,
also, was praised by Head Coach
John Knorr for his sound perform-
ance on defense.
Sunday, April 25, the Toppers
downed Concordia Lutheran Col-
lege of Austin twice by scores of 5-2
and 9-5. Freshman Jim Shelton
pitched game one for St. Ed’s and
went 6% innings before junior Ma-

rio Flores entered the bailgame in
relief. Flores came in with one out
and the bases loaded, but was able
to stifle the Concordia rally and re-
cord a save.
Game two versus Concordia saw
myriad SEU pitchers come and go as
St. Ed’s used five hurlers to down
CLC. Kyle Casburn, Mike Olson,
Richard Schacherl, T. J. Tijerina and
Pat Farrell all saw action on the
mound.
After the games, Knorr showed
pleasure with his team’s effort. “We
played good, strong defense today
and our pitching was also good.
Jimmy Shelton pitched a great
ballgame until the seventh inning
when he got a little wild.”
As far as hitting was concerned,
Knorr was not as thrilled. “We hit
the ball steady today (19 hits), but
there were no big hits. Once again
we could not drive in runs. We left
the bases loaded three times.”
St. Ed’s will play its regular sea-
son finale here tomorrow (Saturday,
Mayl) against Mary Hardin-Baylor.
The game will start at 1:00 pm.
Sophomore Mike Meyer and jun-
ior Tim Tobin both brought in final
scores of 161. Meyer’s first and sec-
ond day standings were 80 and 81,
respectively. Tobin had the same
scores in reverse for the Toppers’
cause. The other team member, Joe
Fenton, shot an 81 and an 82 for a
163 tournament total.
Fifty-four holes of golf were
scheduled, but hard rain, cold wind,
and lightning shortened the second
day to only nine holes for a total of
36 in the decisive match.

St. Edward’s players gear themselves toward the season’s end as they get instructions from Head Coach John
Knorr. _____________________________________

Of the tournament rounds,
Coach Jim Koch said: “We shot very
well as a team. Beck was outstand-
ing. Thompson was a surprise be-
cause he had never shot that well
over the season.”
Of the season, an optimistic Fen-
ton said, “We will be a deciding
force in the conference next year and
the year after. We had a young team
this year and we did well. Everyone
is returning and Tim will be the only
senior.”
Both team and Big State Confer-
ence awards were announced at a
banquet held to honor the men’s and
women’s basketball teams and
women’s volleyball team held re-
cently.
According to Athletic Director
Dan Montgomery, of the 87 athletes
participating in St. Edward’s sports
programs (including baseball, golf,
and tennis), one of every three main-
tained a g.p.a. of 3.0 or above this
year, and were therefore eligible for
the Academic All-Conference team.
Members of the basketball and
volleyball teams who received this
recognition are: Chris Bentley,
Marty Binder, Alan Catalani, Chris
Collins, Jerry Farias, Liz Hernan-
dez, Kathryn Hopkins, Tammy
Kouba, Bradye McClure, Marina
Tijerina, Robert Wilbourn, and
Janise White.
Coaches Diane Daniels, Sharon
McIlroy, and Montgomery then pre-
sented awards which were voted on
by the individual teams.
