Mary Holcomb speaks
at Library Study Club
The Librapr Study Club of Rusk
met Jan. 14 inthe Education Build-
ing of the First Baptist Church. The
president, Ethel Pledger, greeted
everybody with a "Happy New Year."
Lou Ola Hoover set the mood for
the meeting by reading "Live Each
Day to the Fullest" by H. H. Payer.
During a short business meeting,
Bea Mayes was welcomed as a new
member. The nominating commit-
tee reported that it was nominating
the same officers as of1991-92: Mrs.
Pledger, president; Esper Weaver,
vice-president; Katherine Lindsay,
recording secretary; Frances
Crouch, corresponding secretary;
Fayrene Curtis, treasurer; Helen
Finley, reporter, Eloise Willi ngham,
parliamentarian.
This slate of officers was elected
by acclamation. Mrs. Pledger stated
that she owned a picture of the
charter members showing all the
women wearing hats. She urged the
club members to wear hats at the
spring luncheon so that a picture
might be taken for the purpose of
publishing the two pictures in the
Cherokeean-Herald.
Mrs. Weaver introduced Mary
Holcomb, who gave a very humor-
ous book review "A Window over
the Sink" by Peg Brachen. As a be-
ginning the members were re-
minded that it is foolish to declare
You will never catch me doing that.'
Mrs. Brachen was sure that she
would never design a kitchen as she
had listened to a friend involved in
such a procedure.
"As it turned out later, Peg was
confronted with the problem of doing
what she had been sure she would
never do.
"The new house bought by the
Brachens was perfect except for the
containment of a kitchen that was
too small for comfort.
"There were hilarious musings
while Peg considered just what she
needed in an appropriate kitchen
for herself, a cook who was probably
more absent-minded than compe-
tent.
"These musings contained many
reminiscences of her mother's
kitchen. There were poignant re-
membrances of other family mem-
bers who used the kitchen of her
childhood," Mrs. Holcomb said.
The review which brought memo-
ries of their own childhood kitch-
ens, was greatly enjoyed by all.
