Smith, 48, of Jacksonville was at 11
a.m. Tuesday in the Thompson
Funeral HomeChapel with the Rev.
Hank Chandler and the Rev. Bruce
Richmond officiating. Burial was in
Resthaven Memorial Park.
Mrs. Smith was born June 12,
1943, in Texas City. She spent most
of her life in Texas City, but had
lived in Jacksonville for six years.
She was a former employee of the
Veterans Administration Office at
Cherokee County Courthouse, she
attended the Pierces Chapel United
Methodist Church.
Survivors archer husband, James

James M. Smith and Timothy R.

Funeral for Myrtle Ann Shoe-
maker, 87, of Alto, was at 2 p.m.
Sunday in the O. T. Allen and Son
Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev.
Odis Bryan officiating. Burial was
in Old Palestine Ceineteiy.
Mrs. Shoemaker died Friday in
an Alto nursing home after a lengthy
illness.
She was born Sept. 20, 1904, in
Beaumont. She was a homemaker
and lived for 17 years in Alto. She
had lived most of her life in
Galveston. She was a Baptist.
Survivors are one Bon, James K.
Streeter Jr. of Houston; a brother,
Paul Key of Houston; five grand-
children; nine great-grandchildren
and one great-great-granddaughter.
Pallbearers were Kerrait Sutton,
Bill Warner, Elvin Peacock, John
Key^Joey Kelley and Shawn Key.

Funeral for Jesse H. McGowan,
75, of Rusk, was at 1 p.m. Saturday
in the Elm Grove Baptist Church
with the Rev. H. C. Whitaker, the
Rev. James Wickware and the Rev.
George McDuff officiating. Burial
was in Plainview Cemetery under
the direction of Mercy Funeral
Home.
Mr. McGowan died Monday in
East Texas Medical Center—Rusk
after a lengthy illness. He was born
Feb. 8,1916, in Nacogdoches where
he attended school and church.
He was a member of the Elm
Grove Baptist Church and was a
retired employee of Newton Shanks
Box Factory, Jacksonville. He was
a World War II veteran.
Survivors are his wife, Novaline
McGowan of Rusk; three daugh-
ters, Legatha Waters of Nacogdo-
ches and Melba Bradley and Glenda
Black of Rusk; five sons, the Rev. J.
T. McGowan, Floyd Terry
McGowan, Ronnie David McGowan
and Regna Joel McGowan of Rusk
and Darryl Dean McGowan of Jef-
ferson; a brother, Orion McGowan
of Nacogdoches; 22 grandchildren;
one great-grandchildren; and sev-
eral nieces, nephews, cousins and
other relatives.
Pallbearers were Henry Cannon,
Tobie Session, Carl Sanders,
Amsden Johnson, Thurman Hamp-
ton and Richard Wayne Rennels.
Deucons of the Elm Grove Baptist
Church were honorary pallbearers.

Graveside services for Winnie
Alice Meeks, 92, of Rusk were at 2
p.m. Tuesday at Cedar Hill Ceme-
tery with the Rev. C. Wayne Clute
officiating. Arrangements were
under the direction of Wallace-
Thompson Funeral Home.
Miss Meeks died Saturday night
in East Texas Medical Center—
Rusk after a lengthy illness. She
was born April 14,1899, in Rusk to
John H. and Elizabeth Meeks and
was the granddaughter ofPublisher
of the Rusk Observer—forerunner
of the Cherokeean/Herald—Judge
Sam A. and Elizabeth Willson of
Rusk. She was a lifelong resident of
the area and was a Protestant-
Miss Meeks was a self-employed
writer and began writing prose and
poetry at the age of nine. She was a
published author by the age of 12 '
and sold some 108 poems and short
articles during her lifetime.
Mrs. Meeks first began writing
as a young child, when she would
jot down her thought in a memo
book. When she didn't sleep well at
night she would put the finishing
touches on one of her poems.
Miss Meeks wbb the only Ruskite
listed in Hattie Joplin Roach's "Hills
of Cherokee" as a local resident
with published literary works.
Many of her poems have been
published by seven different greet-
ing card companies. One company
published 16 of the verses.
Miss Meeks won a number of
writing contests. She entered com-
positions for radio stations in Dal-
las and Fort Worth and listened for
the announcement of the winners.
Many times her name was called
as first place winner.
In 1949, the Houston Press and
the American Greeting Card Co.
sponsored a Mother's Day poem
contest. Out of4,500 entries, Miss
Meeks was awarded a second place
for her 16-line poem in the serious
division of the competition.
When her mother died, Miss
Meeks retired her pen for good.
Miss Meeks came from a family
of writers, her grandfather, Judge
Willson wrote unpublished poetry,
her aunts Mrs. B. C. (Alice) Hos-
mer, Mrs. W. B. (Birdie) Whitman
and Mrs. R. A. (Lela) Barrett, all
dabbled in writing.
King Robinson, a nephew, car-
ried the family's literary talents
into a new area, radio broadcast-
ing. He worked for a radio station
in Houston, served as president of
the Houston Chamber of Commerce
and was voted one of the outstand-
ing men in Texas for age 35 and
under.
Survivors of Miss Meeks are two
nieces, Gloria Simpson of Vancou-
ver, B.C. and Vivian Lea of
Beaumont; and three nephews
Willson A. Robinson of Houston,
Edgar C. Robinson of Sonora, Calif,
and King H. Robinson of Rusk.

Funeral for Mrs. Pearl Pierce, 85,
of Rusk was at 2 p.m. Saturday in
the Wallace-Thompson Funeral
Home Chapel with the Rev. Grover
Talbert officiating. Burial was in
Lynches Chapel Cemetery.
Mrs. Pierce died Thursday night
in a Jacksonville hospital after a
lengthy illness.
She was born Aug. 9, 1906, in
Rusk and was a lifelong area resi-
dent. She was a member of the Rusk
Firot Baptist Church and the TEL
Sunday School Class. She was a
retired nurse's aide from Rusk State
Hospital, retiring in 1965 after 23
years.
Survivors are a sister, Corene
Jones of Rusk; a stepdaughter,
Wanda Lee Kogler of St. Louíb, Mo.;
a sister-in-law, Inez Miles of Rusk
and two nieces Linda Kelley of Rusk
and June Muse of Port Lavaca; two
nephews Carroll Jones of "Tyler and
Waymon Miles ofLake Jackson; and
several great-nieces and great neph-
ews.
Pallbearers were Floyd Kelley,
Carroll Jones, Doug Jones, Way-
mon Miles, Royce Miles and Gene
Kelley.

Funeral for Lena Agnes Allen, 87,
of Jacksonville was at 4 p.m. Sun-
day in the O. T. Allen and Son
Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev.
John D. O'Donnell officiating. Bur-
ial was in Shiloh Cemetery.
Mrs. Allen died Saturday morn-
ing in a Jacksonville nursing home
after a lengthy illness.
She was born Aug. 16, 1904, in
Douglass and was a lifelong Chero-
kee County resident. She lived in
Alto for several years and had lived
at Jacksonville for 22 years. She
was a member of the St. John's
United Methodist Church.
Survivors are three daughters,
Katherine French and Margie Wal-
lace, both of Jacksonville and Doris
Williams ofLake Jackson; a brother,
the Rev. Roy Felder of Huntsville;
two sisters, Clara Dover of Houston
and OUie Roper of Wharton, 18
grandchildren; 23 great-grandchil-
dren; and 10 greats great-grand-
children.
Grandsons serving as pallbear-
ers were Kenneth French, David
French, J. D. Cox, Jimmy Harris,
Alfred Harris, Don White, Leslie
Parker and DeWayne Wallace.
