The tide against Israel in the press
turned slowly this week, as Israel
supporters, from William Safireof
the New York Times, Jeane Kirk-
Patrick, former U.S. Ambassador
to the UN and Norman Podhoretz,
among others, presented a more
even analysis of the uprising in the
territories, assessing much of the
blame to the intransigence of the
Arabs, both in the territories and
their coreligionists who have used
them as pawns in the propaganda
war against Israel.
The trio, Safire, Kirkpatrick and
Podhoretz, all with access to the
nation's media pierced through the
wave of insurrection to zero in on
the true goals of those who are
masterminding the continuing at-
tempt to "destroy" Israel.

Several local organizations are
sponsoring Dr. Jack Cohen's ap-
pearance at the Jewish Community
Center at 8 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 4,
when Dr. Cohen will speak in con-
junction with the publication of his
newest book, A Reunion of Isaac
and Ishmael.

JCC's Cultural Arts Department,
Hadassah, Hillel, Houston Recon-
structionist Havurah, National
Council of Jewish Women-Hous-

Dr. Cohen's inclusion of a stop
in Houston during his tour of the
United States was at the invitation
of the Houston Reconstructionist
Havurah. Formed in December
1985, the Havurah meets monthly
in private homes. For information

Dr. Cohen, a noted rabbi and
author, lives in Israel. He has 23
years of experience bringing Arabs
and Jews closer together. His book
concludes with the question: Can
Arabs and Jews, "acknowledging
and accepting their common ori-
gin, build a new life together
founded on mutual respect?"
He has taught at the Reconstruc-
tionist Rabbinical College, Phila-
delphia, the Jewish Theological
Seminary, New York, and the David
Yellin College of Education, Jeru-
salem. His speaking tour is spon-
sored by The Reconstructionist
Press, the publication arm of the
Reconstructionist movement in
Judaism.
