. WASHINGTON, - Attacks in the CBS program Sixty Minutes on the U. S.-I srael rela-
tionship and the American I srael Public Affairs Committee's (Al PAC) activitiesat the
Capitol were denounced by Jewish communal leaders including the Conference of
Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, B'nai B'rith and the Anti-Defama-
tion League.
In the televised presentation, former Undersecretary of State George Ball, long a se-
vere critic of I srael, charged that Israel is not an ally of the U.S. while Mike Wallace, the
program's star who also has lashed out at Israel, assailed AIPAC's efforts and U.S. aid
to Israel.
Ball and Wallace are "dead wrong on U.S.-Israel ties and aid", B'nai B'rith emphasized
in its statement Its president, Seymour Reich, said of Ball's comment that "it is aston-
ishing that any intelligent observer of foreign affairs could make that assessment of the
nature of the special relationship between the U.S. and Israel".
" President Reagan has not only repeatedly and expressly defined I srael as this coun-
try's most reliable ally in the volatile and important Middle East, but this administration

TheSixtyMinutescharacterizationoftheletterwhichADL
signed along with the American Jewish Committee and
American Jewish Congress as asserting that Al PAC does not
reflect the consensus of the organized American Jewish
community is entirely incorrect. Our letter sought to im-
prove consultation and coordination in order to enhance
I AIPAC's effectiveness and assure the highest possible de-
gree of consensus.
We are proud of the success of AIPAC, as we are of our
own organization's successes,on behalf of a stronger U.S.-
Israel relationship. They represent democracy at work. We
will all continue our efforts, Sixty Minutes notwithstanding.

ADL officials outline their position
in letter sent to Sixty Minutes
Burton S. Levinson and Abraham H. Foxman, national
chairman and national director, respectively, of the Anti-
Defamation of B'nai B'rith, have sent the following letter to
the producers of Sixty Minutes in connection with that pro-
gram's segment on AIPAC on Sunday, Oct. 23:
The Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith, as one of the
major Jewish organizations serving on the Executive Com-
mittee of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, •
takes strong exception to the picture of AI PAC presented by
Sixty Minutes on Sunday, Oct. 23. Al PAC's activities are what
our democracy is all about. It is citizen action, people from
all over the country motivated by belief in America, belief in
our democratic system, and belief in enhancing relations
between two great democracies.
What Sixty Minutes failed to show its viewers was that
AIPAC's success stems not so much from lobbying, but
from the commitment of Jews and non-Jews all over the
country to whom the well-being of relations between Amer-
ica and Israel is not some abstract notion but an urgent
necessity. AIPAC is a reflection of this motivated, pro-l srael
community. E fforts to pigeonhole the organization as mere-
ly a lobby do a disservice to the entire body of opinion in
America that supports Israel and U.S.-lsrael relations.
