Bruce Gates
Funeral for Bruce Gates, 73, of
Bryan, formerly of Rusk, was at 2
p.m. June 2, in the First United
Methodist Church at Bryan.
The Rev. Bob Richers and the Rev.
Dr. Morris House officiated. Arrange-
ments were under the direction of
Memorial Funeral Home Chapel in
Bryan.
Mr. Gates died May 30, in St. Jo-
seph Regional Health Center. He
was born in Huntington and had
lived in Bryan since 1958. He had
worked for the Cherokeean/Herald
in the mid-1950s as a linotype op-
erator for several years.
He was retired from the Texas
A&M University Printing Center.
He had also worked for seven years
at the Newman Printing Co. Mr.
Gates was a World War II veteran,
serving with the 390th Bombard-
ment Group in Europe as a bombar-
dier/navigator.
He was a member of the Bryan
First United Methodist Church and
the Men's Bible Class.
Survivors include his wife, Juanita
Trates of Bryan; two sons and daugh-
' ters-in-law, Milton and Denise Gates
of Bryan and Keith and Betsy Gates
of Dallas; two sisters, Virginia
Haynie and Gladys Gates, both of
Dallas; two brothers, Howard Gates
of Lufkin and John Gates of
LaFayette, La.; eight grandchildren;
and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made to the
First Untied Methodist Church at
Bryan or to the American Heart
Association.
Gerald Bivins
Memorial services for Gerald W.
Bivins, 63, of Abilene were at 3 p.m.
April 28, in the First Christian
Church at Abilene with the Rev. Jim
Zug officiating.
Mr. Bivins was born in Rusk to F.
E. (Hamp) and Roxine Bivins on
Nov. 30, 1932. He served with the
U.S. Army in Berlin. He married
Wanda Blair in 1956. He worked in
the medical profession while put-
ting himself through college, carry-
ing a double magor, biology and geol-
ogy. He graduated Sume Cume
Laude from Midwest University in
1961 with a Bachelor of Science in
Biology. Mr. Bivins worked as a reg-
istered sanitarian for the City of
Abilene for 30 years, retiring in De-
cember of 1994. At retirement, he
was honored by the Texas Restau-
rant Association, an honor not given
to a sanitarian before.
He was a member of the Veterans
of Foreign Wars and Texas Depart-
ment of Health Registered Sanitar-
ians. '
He was a Cub Scout leader and
helped with Little League, school
plays and Father-Daughter ban-
quets.
Survivors are his wife, Wanda
Bivins of Abilene; four children,
Sherry Bivins, Wayne Bivins and
Diana Bivins, all of Abilene, and
David Bivins of Dallas; two broth-
ers, F. E. Bivins of Olney and C. H.
Bivins of Rusk; three grandchildren,
James, Andrew and Michaela; three
step-grandchildren, Cristal, Whitley
and Malia.
Joe Vaughn
Services for Joe Vaughn, 79,
brother of several Rusk residents,
were at 11 a.m. June 5 at the
Brookside Funeral Home and Cem-
etery.
Mr. Vaughn died at 2 a.m. June 3
in a Cleburn hospital. He was born
in Anderson County.
Survivors include two brothers,
Pat Vaughn of Oklahoma and Emoiy
Vaughn of Rusk; three sisters, Iris
Rogers, Laree Watson and Leota
Chapman of Rusk; a son and daugh-
ter-in-law, J.B. Jr. and Colleen
Vaughn, two daughters and two
grandchildren.

Doris Tudmon
Funeral for Doris Tudmon, 74, of
Rusk was at 2 p.m. Saturday in the
Blount Chapel Baptist Church in
the Shady Grove community with
the Rev. J A. Wickware, the Rev. K.
B. Clater and the Rev. Herman Mar-
tin officiating. Burial was in the
Woodville Cemetery under the di-
rection of Williams Funeral Home.
Mrs. Tudmon died Wednesday at
her home. She was born April 20,
1922, in Smith County. She was
reared in Arp, where she attended
public school and church. She had
been a member of the Blount Chapel
Baptist Church for several years
and the Royal King Court 371.
Survivors are two daughters and
a son-in-law, Sherry Jean Nelson of
Rusk and Bonnie and Ruben
Upshaw of Douglass; two sons and
one daughters-in-law, Tommy
Tudmon of Henderson, Robert and
Nelda Tudmon of Alto; three sisters,
Lorene Caldwell of Troup, Ella Mae
Hines of Coolidge, Ariz, and Ella
Faye Taylor of Post; two sisters-in-
law, Lena Sample of Rusk and
Arzella Daniels of Troup; 11 grand-
children; three great-grandchildren;
and numerous nieces, nephews and
other relatives.
Pallbearers were Roy Lee
Simmons, Travis Simmons,
Kendrick Anderson, Clyde Session,
Leroy King and Elmo Hightower.
Blount Chapel Baptist Church
deacons served as honorary
pallbarers.
Dan E. Reed
Funeral for Dan E. Reed, 42, of
Houston was at 2 p.m. Saturday in
the Wallace-Thompson Funeral
Home Chapel with the Rev. James
Smith officiating. Burial was in Ce-
dar Hill Cemetery.
Mr. Reed died Thursday in San
Antonio following a short illness. He
was born May23,1954, in Fort Worth
to Tommy E. Reed and Betty Ann
Reed Hall.
He was retired from Reed Refrig-
eration, a commercial refrigeration
company. He was a U.S. Air Force
veteran and a Baptist.
Survivors are his wife, Cathy Reed
of Houston; his parents, Edward E.
and Betty A. Hall of Rusk; three
sons, Christopher Raed and Jeffery
Reed of Fort Worth and Daniel Reed
of Houston; two daughters, Jessica
Reed and Andria Reed, both of Hous-
ton; two brothers, Joe Reed of Rusk
and Eddie Hall of Houston; and a
sister, Sheri Reed of Fort Worth.
Robbie S. Jeter
Funeral for Robbie S. Jeter, 80, of
Alto, was at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the
O.T. Allen & Son Funeral Home
Chapel with the Rev. Donald Her-
ring and the Rev. Donald Jeter offi-
ciating. Burial was in Old Palestine
Cemetery.
Mrs. Jeter died Saturday in Alto.
She was born Sept. 14,1915, in Jas-
per to Richard W. and Annie Hardee
Sheffied. She was a homemaker and
also worked as a registered nurse.
She lived most of her life in Houston,
where she was a charter member of
the Greens Bayou Assembly of God
Church.
She had lived in Alto for 18 years
and was a member of the Alto First
Assembly of God Church.
Survivors are two sons, Donald R.
Jeter of Alto and Michael Jeter of
Houaton; two sisters, Myrtle Harris
of Garwood and Lucille Yeates of
Porter; eight grandchildren; and six
great-grandchildren.
Grandchildren served as pallbear-
Mary Ruth Walters
Mary Ruth Walters, 70, of Alto,
died Sunday, June 9, at Eaat Texas
Medical Center Rusk.
Mrs. Walters was born March 14,
1926, in St. Petersburg, Fla. She
spent most of her adult Ufe in Hous-
ton, where she worked for 15 years
for Humble Oil and Refining Co. She
married her husband, William Lee
Walters, on Sept. 25,1970, in Hous-
ton. She was a member of Berachah
Church.
Mrs. Walters and her husband,
Lee, retired and moved to Alto op
June 27,1995.
She is survived by her husband;
her sister, Mildred Haass and fam-
ily; and her brother, James G. Jones
and his family, all of Houston.
Burial arrangements were
handled by O. T. Allen & Son Fu-
neral Home of Alto. A memorial ser-
vice and burial will take place in
Houston at a later date.
Mr. Walters says his wife was
"sweet and loving and a deeply Chris-
tian lady, who only thought of oth-
ers. She will be greatly missed by
those who knew her."
