From the Editor’s Desk
A suitable way to begin this issue’s column from behind the editor’s
desk, or eight ball, whichever it is, is first to apologize for the lapse
of time between the beginning of school and our first issue.
Since another semester has begun, we trust that the students, old
and new, have resolved to study hard, pay attention, make the most
of their time, and, in general, do their best. This is the only way
they can pay their debt to their parents for providing them with the
opportunities of a good education. Also, remember that the guy
in the black cassock isn’t up there because he has no better way to
spend his time or because he likes to be mean; he’s there because he
has dedicated his life to teaching, to enabling you to learn things
which will be of value to you in later life, to helping you in every
way he can. If he has this much interest in you, surely you can put
out at least some effort to cooperate with him. So work hard and
make sure that you will look back on your high school days with a
feeling of satisfaction instead of regret.
This year, as always, we have had changes in faculty. Most im-
portant, of course, is the fact that we have a new principal.
Brother Mel, like all the other new teachers, is well qualified and
will, we are sure, do a lot for the school. We must remember again,
however, that the faculty cannot bear the full load. The students
must do their part. Please show these new teachers that a St. Ed’s
man can be a helpful, considerate, courteous gentleman, and make
them feel that teaching at St. Edward’s is really worthwhile.
This year let’s strive to uphold the code of the St. Ed’s man by
being frequent Communicants and by displaying our loyalty to our
Alma Mater here at the school and away from her sacred precincts.
Be loyal to St. Ed’s by giving your support to all activities that are
sponsored by her. Remember those who participate in sports can be
greatly helped by those who give the team their support at the
school games. Let’s give out with the school spirit and back our
team.
Even though we may be late we, the member’s of the Echo Staff,
wish all of you a very happy and prosperous new year. While we
are wishing greetings, we should also congratulate Father Geuss on
conducting such a splendid retreat. We should in addition like to
commend the entire student body on their fine turnouts for Confes-
sions and Communions during the retreat.
Also congratulations to all those on the honor roll. Let’s continue
to keep up the good work.

Have You Heard?
That James Fogarty has a new
brother?

ing in 3 07.
That there is an old rule against
playing cards for money?

some unwelcome visitors?

pair of shoes?

Breaux lift barbells on Monday,
Wednesday, and Friday?

tended Christmas vacation? Won-
der where he was?

Faculty—
(Continued from Page 1)
the last four years. Besides his
duties as principal, Brother Mel
also teaches chemistry and Gen-
eral mathematics.
Another important addition to
the faculty is Brother Barry Lam-
bour, C.S.C., the new Physics and
Algebra teacher. Brother Barry re-
ceived his master’s degree in En-
gineering from Texas University.
Although new in the High School
this year, Brother Barry is by no
means a stranger on the campus,
having taught in the college for
| the last eight years.
The man who has traveled far-
thest to become a new member
of the faculty is Mr. Peter Pesoli.
Mr. Pesoli, who received his mas-
ter’s degree in English at Notre
Dame, has been teaching since
1952 at Notre Dame Internation-
ale in Rome, which was founded
by the Holy Cross Brothers in that
year at the special request of the
Pope. Located not far from St.
Peter’s, Notre Dame Internation-
ale is a high school for American
boys in Rome. Besides being
freshmen class sponsor, Mr. Pesoli
teaches five English classes.
This year we also have a new
athletic director. He is Brother
Armand Amman, C.S.C. Brother
Armand attended Michigan State
College. He has spent 18 years at
Terra Haute, Indiana, at Gibault
Home for Boys, and one year in
California at El Rancho San An-
tonio, a similar boy’s home. He
replaces Brother Wendel Adams
C.S.C.
Brother Lawrence Fitch, C.S.C.,
comes to us from St. Joseph’s
High School, South Bend, Indi-
ana. He previously taught at St.
Edward, Lakewood, Ohio, after
having received his Bachelor of
Arts Degree from Notre Dame
