Texas FFA State Officer team vis-
ited with top officials on Jan. 6.
Gov. George Bush, Agriculture
Commissioner Rick Perry, Speaker
of the House Pete Laney and numer-
ous legislators and top agriculture
industry leaders made time to visit
with the officer team.
"As part of an annual event, the
FFA leaders come to Austin to spend
a day learning about state govern-
ment and the legislative process,"
said Commissioner Perry. "They
are our future leaders and if we cpn
impress upon them at a young age
the importance of democracy, we can
make a real difference."
Rep. Pete Patterson of Paris hosted
a luncheon for the group in the
Speaker's Dining Room at the capi-
tal. Speaker Laney, along with Rep.
Patterson, thanked the state offic-
ers for attending and encouraged

Members of Xi Epsilon Kappa met
on Dec. 17 at the home of Melody
Lade. They were served a meal of
turkey and dressing with all the
trimmings.
Hostesses for the evening were
Mrs. Lade and Cindy Peloquin.
Members exchanged their secret
sister gifts and also had a cookie
swap. Each member baked cookies
and brought the recipes.
They also played a game with the
Christmas carol The Twelve Days
ofChristmas." Member Cindy Fulton
won the game and the hostess gift.
The group went to the Birming-
ham Health Care Center where they
visited several residents there and
also their special adopted friend, Eva
Robalais. Gifts were given to her at
that time.
The next meeting will be in Janu-
ary, when members will eiyoy a "La-
dies Night Out" with a trip to the
movie and out to eat.
Members present were: Mrs. Lade,
Mrs. Peloquin, Mrs. Fulton, Cindy
Richards, Anita Ocker, Lori Moake,
Bridgett Tosh, Kay Gresham, Kim

Mr. Edney said, "The FFA is well
represented in Texas. These officers
do an outstanding job."

of an amendment to require a
balanced federal budget by
2002.
Throughout the campaign,
I emphasised the importance
of a balanced; federal budget,
and Pm pleased to make this

Congressman," he said.
The balanced budget amend-
ment has gained bipartisan
support from members of the
105th Congress. The amend-
ment will require the Presi-
dent to submit, and congress
to enact, a balanced budget.
Actual spending may not ex-
ceed actual revenue unless
three-fifths of the congress
votes to allow a deficit.

Katie and Carl Lloyd celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary
Jan. 12. The couple was married Jan. 12,1929, at the Methodist
parsonags in Jacksonville. Mrs. Lloyd is the former Kstie Clark of
Maydelle. Both have lived in the Rusk area most of their lives. The
Lloyds sre well known as gospel singers. They sre active members
of Memorial Baptist Church. Their three children and their spouses
are James Earl and Bina Lloyd of Rusk; Louverl and Jim Bob
Griffin of Rusk; and Gary and Doylene Lloyd of Piano. There are
eight grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.

Rusk TJC students complete
volunteer internship program
Cristin Parker and Shannon
riddle, both of Rusk completed the
volunteer internship program for the
fall semester at Tyler Junior Col-
lege. They were among ten students
honored during a reception on Dec.
3.
The students worked 100 hours
for their assigned employer, perform-
ing jobs pertaining to their field of
study. Businesses which partici-
pated includei Ea§t/fexas Medical
Center Rehabilitation Center, Trin-
ity Mother Frances Regional Health
Center in Mineóla, ETMC in
Quitman, Trinity Mother Frances
Clinic, Tyler Rehabilitation Hospi-
tal, Office of the Attorney General,
Smith County Public Health Dis-
trict, TJC Computer Services, Broad-
way Square Mall, Gulfstar Commu-
nication and Jacksonville Savings
and Loan.
