for a monthly meeting. Rona Long
was welcomed aa a new member
transferring from Colorado.
Each member drew half of a valen-
tine from a box and had to find the
other half of the valentine from an-
other member. The two members
had to write a valentine poem on a
large valentine and read it aloud.
The group created some very inter-
esting poems for the enjoyment of
everyone.
Karen Fortenberry, daughter of
Lois Taggart, was a visitor and re-
ceived the hostess gift.
A Valentine social was held at the
home of Mildred Chapman on Feb.
18 . Each member brought valen-
tines in a decorated bag. Dorothy
McClure's bag waa judged the "most
beautiful."
Marie Sales was crowned Valen-
tine Queen.

comprehensive academic curricu-
lum, which included learning to re-
cruit and prepare applicants for en-

A Cherokee County man was sen-
tenced to 17 years in Texas Depart-
ment of Criminal Justice for the ag-
gravated sexual assault of his wife.
District Attorney Jim Cromwell said
thiB was a first for a Cherokee County
jury to convict a man for sexually
assaulting his wife.
Jorge Rivas Monpie has been a
fugitive for more than three years.
He was also sentenced to five years
for burglary of a habitation with the
sentence to run concurrently.
"This is a very significant step
toward the 21st century," Mr.
Cromwell said in reference to a case
he calls the most significant case he
has tried since becoming district at-
torney.
The DA told the Cherokee an/Her-
ald Tuesday afternoon that the de-
fendant had threatened his es-
tranged wife. "He told her that she
should have killed him because if he
goes to jail he will have some else kill
her."

Mr. Monpie has a prior conviction
for aggravated robbery in 1983 for
which he spent three years in TDCJ.
Monpie was estranged from his
wife when the assault occurred just
after midnight on Jan. 19,1993. Mr.
Cromwell said it occurred in the
Monpie's living quarters in a church
near Rusk. He threatened his wife
with a knife during the assault.
She called the police and was ex-
amined at a hospital before return-
ing to her home near Jacksonville.
At approximately 4 a.m. he broke
into her home and assaulted her
with a blunt dinner knife. The
woman's son and a friend held him
until police arrived.
Following his indictment for the
charges, Mr. Monpie posted bond
and was released. Authorities did
not know of his whereabouts until
he was arrested in November in
Kemp for driving while intoxicated
and held for local authorities.
