Rusk High School choir members receiving superior ratings in Cisss I Solo end Ensemble in
i Marshall on Feb. 8 were Norman Griffin, Nichole Kelly and Christina Pilchsr; in back, Tammy Goss,
Chiniqua Tilley and Leah Reece. They will compete in the State Solo and Enssmbls competition in
lay.
Sixteen RHS students participatsd in the Solo snd Ensemble Contest in Marshall Feb. 8. Among
participants were from left In front Leigh Ann Davis, Shsnequee Anderson, Kayla Allan and
Roshunda Tilley; and in back, Raehawd Lewis, Dsrrlck Windom snd Rachasl Wilson. Six first
division ratings were received. t

Eagles finish season #1 in district
Rusk's Fighting Eagleslostatough
basketball game to their old rival,
the Crockett Bulldogs, last Friday
night by the score of 92-80.
Coach Marks Lanham's Feathered
Flock played fine basketball most of
the game, but a cold spell in the
fourth quarter was the big differ-
ence. The Bulldogs held a 77-74
lead with five minutes left in the
game.
The famous Eagle fourth quarter
rally failed to materialize and the
Bulldogs got a hot streak. They hit
for 12 consecutive points in a four
minute span to put the game on ice.
The Eagles never gave up, and
.) scored the last four points to make
the final 92-80.
Rusk began the first quarter on a
hot streak, and ran up a 23-13 lead
over Crockett at the end of the first
quarter.
The Bulldogs came back in the
second quarter and outscored the
Birds 27-19, score at the half time
was Rusk 42 and Crockett 40.
The two teams traded buckets
until late in the fourth quarter when
Rusk hit their cold spell, and
Crockett got even hotter. Final score
was 92-80 in favor of Crockett.
Marcus Carter was high point man
for the Eagles with 21 points; Aaron
Birdwell was good for 19 points.

Eagles hitting for three points

Seventh Grade District Champs
Fourteen RHS players >
make all-district teams
Marcus Carter, District MVP
Seven Rusk basketball play-
ers were recently named to the
20-3A All District team.
¡Marcus Carter, a sophomore,
was named Most Valuable
Player for the district. Coach
Marks Lanham, along with Mike
Day of Hudson, was named
Coach of the Year.
Lamont Turner, senior, was
the only Eagle to make the first
team.
Seniors Cole Bowman and
Aaron Birdwell and junior
Rashawd Lewis, were named to
the second team.
Honorable mention went to
seniors Dominic Jenkins and
Josh McAdams.
SevenLady Eagles also made
the all-district cut this year.

Leviston, senior and Martha
Sturns, junior. Senior Kandy
Sitgreaves made the second
team.
Honorable mention went to
sophomores Charle Blake-
more and Tameka Gardner,
junior Miste Bolden and se-
nior Denise Jones.
Rusk basketball teams end season
Two teams named district champs
Two junior high teams finished
the 1996-97 basketball season as
district champions.
Rusk Junior High's seventh grade
boys "A" team finished their basket-
ball season as district champe with
an undefeated record of 12-0. The
team also earned two first place
trophies: one at the Athens tourna-
ment and one in the Rusk tourna-
ment.
The seventh grade "B" team ended
their season with an overall record
of 5-3. They competed in the Athens
"B" tournament and came home with
the first place trophy.
The seventh grade teams were
coached by Paul Marsh and Pete
Jackson.
The eighth grade Lady Eagles fin-
ished out their season with an over-
all record of 14-1 and a district record
of 8-0. They were coached by Kathy
Guidry.
They won second place at the Pal-
estine tournament. The Lady Eagles
are district champions for the fourth
year in a row.
Seventh grade Lady Eagles fin-
ished their season with an overall
record of 8-4 and a district record of
6-2.
The seventh grade team was
coached by Billie Lyn Walley.
The eighth grade boys basketball
"A" team rounded out their season
with a 7-5 record this year. The
team brought home two second place
trophies from the Athens "A" tour-
nament and the Rusk tournament.
The "B" team finished their sea-
son with a 6-2 record and a first
place trophy from the Athens "B"
tournament.
Eighth grade teams were coached
by Kevin Ellis and Paul Marsh.
Freshman Lady Eagles completed
their season with a 17-3 overall
record and an 8-2 district record.
They also won first place in the
Weetwood tournament.
The team was coached by Kathy
Guidry.
