found that those who criticize reli-
gion and Gays are the ones who
know the least about them and are
not willing to learn more because of
their own insecurity about their faith
and sexuality.
With or without this organiza-
tion, there will still be Gays at SEU.
This only allows us to each out to

critical. I don’t believe that to be
true on this issue. Gays and Lesbi-

bility to learn about this community
of people. The group seems to have
good intentions in gathering. Every
group needs a support system: His-

Teachers Association, and the
Catholic Church itself who is a
community of sinners in search of
the kingdom of God.
It is quite fitting that SEU has
this new organization because
people need to share with others
like them and need to be listened to

Dear Editor,
In reading the Hilltop articles
on the issue of Gays and Lesbians
in SEU, there are a few points I
wanted to make.
First of all, the Catholic Church
is not against birth control. It is
against artificial means of birth
control. It is a fine line to make but,
it makes a big difference. The
Catholic Church offers Natural
Family Planning methods of birth
control.
It is the practice of periodic
abstinence to regulate human birth
or making love when the women’s

the people I have talked to didn’t
join because of the workload in-
volved. The program’s require-
ments are like those of a minor.
You have 21 hours of extra classes
and a Senior Thesis, a upgraded
version of RCM where you present
your paper to an open forum. B eing
in the Honor’s Program is fun, but
it’s also hard work.
If we come across as being
elitists, it is not the students’ faults.
It is the faculty and administration
that put us at a level above every-
one else. I do not ask to be intro-
duced at Honors night before ev-
eryone else just because I am a
member of the Honors Program. I
do not ask to be called one of the
“best and brightest on campus”. It
is a label given to me by others.
There are a lot of people on this
campus that deserve that label more
than me. I do not even like awards

for the outcast; he ate with the out-

I am not saying that it is OK to
be gay, neither do I think it is
emotionally nor spiritually
healthy, but I am saying that we do
not have the right to insult nor judge

Dear Editor:
I am writing to express my ap-
preciation of your coverage of the
newly formed Gay and Lesbian
Student Association and some of
the reaction to its formation. I
commend the courage of the stu-
dents who have risked ostracism—
and much worse—by coming out of
the closet to form and defend the
Association. The article by Lynn
Russell and the courageous and self-
revealing column by Philip Nolen
were excellent, and dealt very well
with many of the objections some
people have toward the group.
As pointed out in both columns,
the Church does not condemn
people simply for being
homosexually oriented. There are,
in fact, many Church-sanctioned
support groups (including here in
Austin) for gays and lesbians.
Therefore, the mere fact of the
Association should cause no prob-
lem. There is nothing in the
Association’s chapter opposes
Church teaching; where each mem-
ber stands on the issue is not par-
ticularly relevant to membership.
The Association was formed for
gay students to give each other
mutual support. If you have ever

struggle a gay person goes through,
you can see why a Catholic institu-
tion is precisely where they should
