In the article "SEU Receives $12 Million Grant," appearing in the October
17, 1995 issue, it should state SEU received $1.7 million from a cumulative
total of $12 million given by HACU to several universities.

was the first to successfully reduce the spread of AIDS in their
community. And the quickest rise in today’s spread is in young
college-aged women.
I’m sorry straight people split up so much, as Colin de-
picted, and hurt each other with vengeance. I can see this is
prominent in Colin’s life. But what is not prominent in his life
is the acquaintance of gay women and men: the only word he
used for them was “deadbeat.” And he judged them according
to his self-declared universal morals, as if that was sufficient to
deny a group of American citizens basic civil rights.
The gay community is most compassionate and sensitive
due to their journey: job discrimination, apartment/housing bias,
lack of health aid and 143 civil rights linked to marriage, and
being survivors of 16 percent of Austin’s hate crimes last year.
Anne Frank’s words are universal to the Gay Liberation
and Movement, “I still believe in spite of everything that people
are really good at heart.” I believe that Colin will be enlight-
ened one day with an experience outside of his chosen realm:
having a gay friend.
Rights are not a moral issue. Rights are legal, constitu-
tional, and political. And who is to say Colin’s morals are in
any way superior to mine? Colin should judge himself, and
leave lesbians and gays alone.

Registration Nuisance Creating
"Hell" For Student
by Carlie A. Dos Santos
In the future, please enlist a more knowledgeable and logi-
cal writer to debate particular issues. M. Colin Strother babbled
about gay marriages without any reasonable, sound arguments,
analogies, or statistics.
According to the 1990 United States Census, 1.6 million
households in the U.S. are same-sex couples, therefore nullify-
ing his label to the gay community as a “minute faction.”
“Redneck” intermarriages, as he parallels gay marriages,
cause birth deforms; only positive health changes occur for the
couples I know in gay marriages.
Also, common law marriage is not, as he asserts, the same
as requested gay marriages: ceremony, documentation, celebra-
tion, and validation are being lobbied for. Therefore, no eight
year platonic roommate can divorce you, helplessly, since the
marriage does not exist. Also, there are more heterosexuals with

Referring to the Oct. 17 issue of Hilltop Views, I
was initially embarrassed at the front page announcement
that we were “celebrating homosexuality on SEU” and
then, after further reflection, perplexed. (My concern is
the front page announcement; the inside articles seem to
be serious attempts to discuss a significant question.)
What are we supposed to be celebrating at St. Ed’s?
Let me state where I’m at. I accept that homosexual ob-
servation may well be a fact of life for some, and I know
that those of homosexual orientation are usually good
people who do great things with their lives. Regardless
of sexual orientation, all of us have the moral obligation
(it comes down to respecting the gifts of God) to channel
our responses to our urges in ways that respect society’s
need and God’s command. It isn’t easy, and I respect those
homosexual genital activity is in itself morally wrong—
in somewhat the same way as adultery is morally wrong.
I consider that those of homosexual orientation need
special support in a promiscuous society of mostly het-
erosexual orientation, and I am happy to see a sharing
and support group in existence on the SEU campus. I
commend Dr. Ed Shirley for taking the time to serve as
faculty advisor for GLSA. Maintaining their own right
to privacy, students usually don’t discuss their sexual
orientation (even less their sexual activity) with faculty,
but I have respected, been honest with, and tried to help
those students who chose to share their struggle with me.
To return to my question—what are we supposed to
be celebrating at SEU? Are we trying to support those of
homosexual orientation? I’m all for that. In ordinary un-
derstanding “homosexual” implies openness to homo-
sexual activity, and that’s a major part of the difficulty
with “coming out.” Are we celebrating openness to ho-
mosexual activity at St. Ed’s? I hope not.
