BERGES FEST MERCHANT
PARTICIPATION
Last year the Boerne busi-
ness people were each asked to
donate $10 toward financing
the first Berges Fest. This
participation was a big help
in making the celebration a
success.
This year the merchants are
being asked to give either $10
or its equivalent in goods to
be given as prizes. With Ber-
ges Fest running two days,
there will be many more con-
tests and that means more
prizes.
Mrs. Harry Davis is chair-
man of the committee for Mer-
chant Participation. She and
a bevy of Boerne matrons plan
to call on each of our business
men and women.
However, Mrs. Davis is
afraid that due to busy busi-
ness days it may not be pos-
sible to contact THE BOSS in
each case and she certainly
doesn’t want to deprive any-
one of this opportunity.
If by any chance you are
not contacted, please call ei-
ther Mrs. Davis, Mrs. Alex
Fish, Mrs. Henry Luther or
Mrs. Owen Deeg, Jr., and one
of them will pick up your “par-
ticipation.”

Whichever petition you sign,
don’t sign the other one. And
whichever petition you sign—

The federal government,
courtesy Mr. Lawrence T.
Ayres, gave Kendall County
priority in the preparation of
a Civil Defense Plan pamphlet.
The pamphlet, now being dis-
tributed, is strictly for Ken-
dall County. If yours goes
astray in the general distribu-
tion ,each community library
can sunnly you a copy. No one
believes our county will ever
be atom bombed. Many do be-
lieve that irresponsible na-
tions, in testing atomic devices
can and will spread a rain of
radioactive dust to drift many
thousand miles and fall on us.
The pamphlet tells how to
guard against death from the
dust. Most important in the
report—it shows how you can
prepare at home in the country
for the danger without going
to a fall-out shelter. The com-
missioners’ court greatly ap-
preciates what Mr. Ayres has
done for us, as a representa-
tive of the Civil Defense De-
partment of the Devartment
of Public Safety, and the fed-
eral government. Many coun-
ties were clamoring for his
services. On motion of Com-
missioner Gus Barrington, sec-
onded by Commissioner Ed
Whitworth, at the regular
term of court and unanimously
approved by all members of
the court, this paragraph was

We are proud to salute all fathers on Their Day,
Sunday, June 16. We realize that without them to
guide and direct us that we would find life a lot hard-
er road to follow.
The dictionary calls a father “a guardian, pro-
tector, or preserver,” but when you stop to think,
fathers are a lot more than this. They also act as ex-
amples for little ones to follow, family leaders, and
many other roles too numerous to mention. Think where
we would be if there were no fathers around to earn
a living, repair various items around the house, help
out when the children need money for school, or dates,
or that first car, dicipline the children, keep the check-
book balanced, replace light bulbs in those hard to
reach places, keep the car serviced and clean, and the
many other functions that fathers take care of daily.
For all these reasons, we appreciate our fathers and
take a day out of the year to show our appreciation.
There are various ways in which we show our ap-
preciation. Some families suspend all of Dad’s duties
on his special day and cater to his every desire. Other
families give gifts or candy to Dad, and still others
take him on a picnic, fishing trip, or to a ball game
that he might like to see. If you decide to give Dad
a gift or a box of candy, think of us as we have a full
supply of both. Our candy supply includes Judson
Toppers, Pecaneros, Mints, Chocolates, and Pralines.
You might want to give Dad a Royal typewriter, and
since we are the Royal dealer in Boerne, we can ar-
range for you to get any type that you want. But
whether you give Dad a gift or not, show him that you
truly appreciate the things that he does to make life
easier for you.
