Alto Ladyjackets take home bragging rights to championship
Penn, Thacker
tie state record for
2A schools
Alto's young Ladyjackets played
like seasoned veterans Saturday
morning as they defeated defend-
ing state champion, Coahoma, 5-3
for the state Class 2A champion-
ship. The title game was played at
the Sportplex at Pleasant Valley
in Austin.
The Ladyjackets wound up with
11 hits and five runs in their win
over the defending state champi-
ons before 753 fans. The game was
broadcast live through facilities of
KWRW and KTLU with J. D.
Pearman and Sam Florian describ-
ing the action.
Alto broke the game wide open
and took the lead for good in the
fifth inning. Third baseman Brit-
tany Thacker and right fielder Kati
Sturrock opened the inning with a
pair of singles. Pitcher Alison Liles
hit another single to load the bases.
Rheagan Penn, the only senior
on the team, came up and hit a
ground rule double when her hit
ran past third base and stayed in
play for the ground rule double.
Thacker and Sturrock scored and
the Ladyjackets were ahead 3-1.
Penn had gone 3 for 3 which tied
the Class 2A tournament record
for most hits in a game, the day
before in Alto's win over Shiner.
"I knew we really needed a hit,
so I got up there and it (the ball)
came over just right," explained
Penn after the game.
Alto added a couple of more runs
in the sixth inning . These runs
became as big as Dallas when Coa-
homa came up with two runs also
to get the score to Alto 5 and Coa-
homa, 3, at the end of the sixth.
The Ladyjackets final scores
came when Ronda Williams
started the action with a single.
She later crossed the plate when
Kara Baugh hit a short ground
ball to the Coahoma pitcher, who
could not get the ball to the plate in
time for the out. Thacker scored
the final Alto run when Liles hit a
single.
Thacker enjoyed an outstanding
game as she tied Penn's 3 for 3
record set a day earlier. She also
scored two runs.
A very modest Thacker com-
mented that she was lucky. She
praised the work of her entire team.
The final seventh inning was score-
less despite a hit by Coahoma,
which was all the action they could
muster.
The Ladyj ackets hit pay dirt first

when Katy Pearman got on first
base on a Coahoma error. Thacker
hit a long ball on a fielder's choice
that allowed Pearman to move onto
second base. A wild pitch allowed
her to scoot over to third base.
Pearman advanced to home plate
when Williams hit a fielders' choice
ground out.
Alison Liles threw
more than 100
pitches for the
state victory
The Alto lead was short lived as
Coahoma came back and tied the
score in their part of the fourth
inning.
Liles, a 15-year-old freshman,
threw a total of 100 pitches for the
victory. She allowed seven hits and
struck on five. She only gave up
one walk. The young lady had
thrown 78 pitches Friday after-
noon in Alto's 3-0 win over Shiner.
"This win is great," said
Ladyjacket Coach Cindy Sessions,
who wound up her second year as
the Ladyjacket mentor.
She recalled that she told the
superintendent that the team
would win a state championship
in one or two years. Her optimism
paid big dividends.
■ Semi-final game was
a flawless victory
Alto's Ladyjackets played a flaw-
less defensive baseball game
against Shiner last Friday, and

ended up with a convincing 3-0
win at the Pleasant Valley
Sportsplex in Austin before more
than 1,000 fans.
The win moved the Ladyjackets
into the championship game with
Coahoma Saturday morning.
Alto's pitcher, Alison Liles, and
catcher Rheagan Penn both tied
state records in the semi-final
game with Shiner.
Liles threw 78 pitchers Friday
and stuck out nine. This tied the
state record for most strikeouts in
a tournament game.
The 15-year-old freshman only
walked one batter and allowed
three hits for the complete game.
The Ladyjackets only senior,
Rheagan Penn, went to the plate
three times and made three hits.
All three hits were singles, coming
in the first, third and fifth innings.
In the seventh inning, she got on
base due to a Shiner error.
Neither team could score until the
fourth inning when the Ladyjackets
scored two runs on three hits and an
error to take the lead 2-0.
Shortstop Ronda Williams hit a
one out single down third base
line, and second baseman Laresa
King made a hit that put runners
on first and third bases. With two
runners on, Brittany Thacker sent
a long fly ball in center field that
allowed both Williams and King to
score.
Alto put on an insurance run in
the five as Liles led off with a
single. Penn moved her to second
on a single, and she later scored on
a fielder's choice ground ball by
designated hitter Monique
Thacker.

the first job I ever had. I spent four
years there as a life guard."
Other Ruskites recall summer-
time at the swimming pool being
"like a party every day."
Another swimmer recalled, "It
was the fad one summer to make
homemade swimsuits from tow-
els. All the little girls wanted to do
what the high school girls were
doing, but those swimsuits were
so ugly."

Their past histories are almost a
mirror image of each other. Both
were reared in musically oriented
families and began performing at
an early age.
After living and working in other
parts of Texas, both returned to
East Texas, reunited and cut their
first self-titled tape. The six tracks
were not only written by the two,
but they also performed all of the
music on the tape without any
additional musicians.
