Box's Creek Garden Club hears about Formosan lily
A Philippine native was
touted by Joe Daniel at the
January meeting of the Box's
Creek Garden Club. Daniel, a
horticulturist with the Texas
Cooperative Extension, highly
recommended the Formosan
lily as a perennial for the
group meeting in the historic
Adam's Chapel Church.
He said that if church
members had planted Lilium
formosanum in 1855 when
the church was founded, the
hillside would be covered with
clusters of white fragrant
trumpets each sum mer. When
reminded that the church is
built on a droughty hilltop
of Nacogdoches fine sandy
loam, strongly sloping soil,
the county agent said that the
Formosan hly was as tough a
perennial as lantana.
Box's Creek Garden Club has
monthly meetings.
In 2004 tours of the SFA
Azalea trail, Athens Arbo-
retum and Fishery, Moore
Farms, Jordan Plant Farm
and Galveston are sched-
uled.
