Rusk athletes honored at All-Sports Banquet

Jeremy Bolton and Angelica
Villegas won top honor s for ath-
letic achievement at the recent
Rusk All-Sports Banquet.
Awards were given to ath-
letes from all sports with
supporters also recognized
for their contributions.
Robert Gonzalez presented
the E.H. Whitehead Award for
the outstanding male athlete
to Bolton. The award is given
each year to the senior boy with
good grades, good leadership
abilities, high values and
moral standards. The winner
also must participate in extra-
curricular activities and sports
and serve as a role model for
younger students. This award
has been presented every year
since 1963, Bob Edwards was
the first recipient.
Ms. Villegas won the J.L.
l fas.se11 award that was pre-
sented by Dr. Jerry Ocker.
The award is given each year
to the senior girl and based on
the same criteria as the E.H.
Whitehead award.
Coach Richard Tucker
awarded the M.R. Philbrick
"Fighting Heart Award' to
Angie Griffin, Gearld Morris
and Nelson Pryor. Theawardis
presentedin memory offormer
Rusk coach ami principal M.U.
Philbrick.
It is presented to a RHS
athlete who shows unusual
desire to participate in a sport
or sports.
The recipient should be
an athlete who has shown
team and personal spirit by
"staying with it" despite any
obstacles they may have had
to overcome.
Tucker presented the
Jacksonville Daily Progress
Scholar Athlete award to Jamie
Derrington and Kyle Larson.
Tucker also presented the
RHS Sportsmanship Awards
to Crystal McCloskey, Larson
and Trent Fulton.
The awards are presented to
the Rusk athlete who exhibits
good sportsmanship in all
competition and shows team
spirit on the field and in the
classroom.
Tucker presented the Rusk
Quarterback Club Football
Award to Cody Glenn. Glenn,
an All-State running back,
accounted for 2,000 yards
rushing.
Coach Wayne Larson pre-
sented the Class of '63 Play-
ers Choice Football Award to
Bolton.
Coach Marks Lanham pre-
sented the Doug Jordan Bas-
ketball Award to Jordan Beard
and Reed Lanham.
Lanham was also presented
an award by athletic director
Wayne Mahaffey.
Lanham is stepping down as
head basketball coach after 13
years. He will remain in Rusk
and with Rusk ISD.
The Billy Watson Players'
Choice award was presented
to Kristen Ross.
Demedrick Hunter was given
the Class of '73 Dale Dotson
Players' Choice award from
Lanham.
The award is named for
standout basketball player.
Dale Dotson who earned All-
American honors at Rusk
before playing for Lon Morris
College and the University of
Texas. He is the current coach
at Lon Morris College.
The Rusk Lions Club David
Hill/Kelly Kennedy baseball
award was presented to
Jordan Beard by coach Shane
Reyenga.
The criteria for the award
included sportsmanship, ath-
letic abihty, citizenship, moral
character and academics.
Coach Terri Pierce pre-
sented the Rusk Quarterback
Club Softball award to pitcher
Ross.
The Rusk Quarterback Club
power hfting awards went to
Kyle Larson, Kimberly Ocker
and Villegas. Coaches Larson
and Lucretia Anderson pre-
sented the awards.
Coach Paul Owen presented
the Rusk Quarterback Club
cross-country award to Vil-
legas and Chris Knight.
Villegas also got the top
girls track award from coach
Pat Fowler.
Tucker recognized Brad
Guidry and Bolton with the
Rusk Quarterback Club track
award.
Coach Kevin Ellis pre-
sented the Rusk Quarterback
Club tennis awards to Rusty
Blachard, Joel Daniel and
Brooke Downs.
Coach Anderson awarded top
honors in volleyball with the
Rusk Quarterback Club award
to Derrington and Griffin.
Anderson gave the "110
Percent'' award to Ehzabeth
Guinn.
Rusk Quarterback Club
scholarships of $500 each
went to Tori Gresham and
Jake Ocker.
The Rusk Quarterback Club
for 2003-2004outgoing officers
is: Steve Daniel, President;
Anita Ocker; Vice-President:
Vicki Lucas, Secretary; Jackie
McLendon, Treasurer.
Incoming officers are; Joey
Bowman, President; Vicki
Lucas, Vice-President; Vesta
Downs, Secretary and Janice
Cummins, Treasurer.
Mickey Smith was the
speaker at the banquet, intro-
duced byMahaffey.
Anita Ocker received the
Rusk Quarterback Club's
Francis Townsend award given
to the club's most out standing
member.
Booster club special proj-
ects including: paying for
Gator vehicle for the athletic
department, purchasing a
drag for baseball and Softball
fields, a new Eagle mascot for
cheerleaders, 10 golf bags for
boys and girls' teams, hooded
sweatshirts for powerlifting
teams, paint for end zones,
sponsoring basketball tour-
nament, hosted hospitality
room for all three basketball
tournaments, hosted coaches'
meals for Jordan Relays,
donated to the Senior Finale
golf tournament and basket-
ball concession fundraisers,
gave two $500 scholarships
and purchased cooking sup-
plies for trailer for the Rusk
Eagle Cooker/Smoker.
