ellowjackets wallop arch rival Groveton 24-12
Randall Birdsong
Jackets take on Troup
Tigers this Friday
It is the rivalry of all rival-
ries. TheAltoYellowjackets
playing the Groveton Indi-
ans is always a "slam bang,
headbustin', take no prisoners"
war. The Yellowjackets were
the mightier
warriors this
night as the
black and gold
thumped the
Groveton Indi-
ans 24 — 12 in
Groveton.
Beating
the Indians
anytime is a
wonderful thing around Alto.
Beating them at their place is
sweeter than sweet.
Excitement filled the air as
the crowd on both sides of the
field anxiously awaited the
opening kickoff of the season's
first official varsity football
game. The Jackets won the
toss and elected to defer their
option until the second half.
Groveton started their first
chivé from their own 41. The
Jacket defense wreaked havoc
with the Indian offense. Alto's
Tyson Mitchell intercepted
Indian quarterback Chase
Seamans' initial pass attempt.
The pick gave the Jackets the
ball at the Indian 41.
Alto drove down to the Indian
five-yard stripe where Tyson
Mitchell slashed in for the
touchdown. Dionisio Cuevas
provided the point after, setting
the score at Alto 7 — Groveton
0 with 7:22 left to play in the
first quarter.
The Indians took the kick-

off and set up shop at their
35. Groveton seemed content
to grind and slash their way
toward the Alto goal line. The
Jacket defense was giving the
Indians a fit the whole way.
Tyson Mitchell read an outside
run and delivered the very first
"slobberknocker" of the young
season. The Indian player
looked like a tree: that had just
been felled by a chain saw.
The Indians picked them-
selves up, dustedthemselves off
and kept plugging away. With
the ball on the Jacket 8$ Sea-
mans handedoff to RodHorace,
who streaked the S3 yards for
the Indians first score with 4:
59 left in the first quarter. The
try for point was no good.
Following the kickoff the
Jackets bogged down on offense
and had to punt, Groveton
blocked the punt attempt and
set up shop at the Jacket four.
Horace again pounded the ball
in from the one. The Indians
went for the t wo-point conver-
sion and came up short. The
scoreboard stood at Alto 7
—Groveton 12with I: I5remain-
ing in the first quarter.
The Jackets opened their next
drive at their own 45 and drove
to the 48. Quarterback Juhan
Willis got the ball to Jaszman
Mitchell who raced 52 yards
to the three-yard line. Tyson
Mitchell took it from there for
the score with 11:55 left in the
first half. Cuevas booted the
PAT to give: the Jackets the
lead at 14 — 7.
It was three and out for the
Indians with the Jackets taking
over on their own 40. Alto fum-
bled the ball with the Indians
making the recovery.
The Indians, starting from
the Jacket 36, promptly threw
an interception. Jamarcus
Mitchell was credited with the
pick giving the Jackets the ball
back at their own 25.
The Jackets drove to the
Inchan 21 where Tyson Mitch-
ell scampered for the score.
Cuevas PAT was good and the
Jacket lead was 21 — 12 with 5:
28 left in the half.
Groveton started their
next chive from their own 85.
This one went nowhere. Alto
thwarted the Inchan offense
with the help of Kenchick Mor-
rison ancl Lance Low, who con-
tributed an heretofore unheard
of " slobber knocker.' Anyway
you slice it, that's three "slob-
berknockers'' in one ba 11 game
by the Jackets and this is only
the first game of the season.
Neither team coulcl mount a
successful drive for the entire
third quarter.
The final Jacket score of the
contest came at the 9:38 mark
of the fourth stanza as Cuevas
connected on a 23-yard field
goal. That placed the score at
Alto 24 — Groveton 12. Three
times in a row the Indians
had the football at the Jacket
24, 26 and 39 yard line. An
incredible job was clone by the

The Alto defensive line never wavered as they kept the pressure on the Groveton
indians Friday night. When the scoreboard measured the final score of the game, the

Head Coach/Athletic Director
Keith Gardner saicl after the
game> 'Tm really pleased with
the win. Our defense played
good. We need a little work
on offense and special teams.
