Alto ISD okays $25,000 for new reading program
By Don Wallace
Staff Writer
Alto school board members
voted unanimously to approve
$25,000 for an additional
elementary school reading
program.
The system called "Literacy
Library" was given $25,000 in
startup funding by the board.
The "Literacy Library" will be
set up in a currently unused
classroom on the elementary
campus. A paraprofessional
already on staff will be used to
maintain and store the reading
material.
Alto Interim Superintendent
La Wayne Sheffield said money
for the program will come from
supplemental book funds and
the regular budget.
"With some belt-tightening,
we can do it," Mr. Sheffield
said.
The board voted to approve
the program following an
audiovisual presentation made
by teacher Misty Duplichain,
assisted by other teachers.
Alto Elementary School
principal Melody Witt was
instrumental in the program
being brought to the attention
of school board members.
Alto personnel had toured
Venus Elementary School view-
ing a program at that school
district set up by Mrs. Witt as
a working model.
Mrs. Witt saidit was her goal
to educate the staff on the uses
of the program through in-ser-
vices and start in the spring and
begin full time with the reading
system in the fall.
"This program is important
to all the board members,"
Randy Sturrock, board presi-
dent said.
Mr. Sturrock also addressed
the group of teachers in the
audience. "You are here, you
believe in it and we appreci-
ate that."
Mrs. Witt said, "This is a
really good diagnostic tool and
it can benefit all students at the
elementary school."
Alto elementary currently
has approximately 350 stu-
dents in pre-Iv through fourth
grades, including two Head
Start classes.
"We'll need a semester to
plan and organize things. But
once we have it in place it is a
portable library, it can be moved
anywhere. Our goal, as teach-
ers, is to do a good job with the
first grades and make reading
fun and enjoyable," Mrs. Witt
said.
Mrs. Witt said after the meet-
ing that she was very glad Alto
approved the "Literacy Library"
program.
"I think we are the only school
in the area to have it. It puts
us on the cutting edge," Mrs.
Witt remarked.
The Alto football players who
earned all- district honors were
recognized and individually
presented certificates by board
member Teddy Pearman.
Receiving certificates were
Jared Lindsey, Clayton Scott,
Kendrick Morrison, Jeremy
Lofton, Lance Low, Tarlandus
Mitchell, Juhan Willis, Tareel-
lus Mitchell, Antron Dicker son,
Trevor Scott, Tyson Mitchell,
Ben Johnson, Garrett Davis,
Chase Berryhill, Jamarcus
