without inward peace,” said the Pon-
tiff. “Only the most holy religion of
God can bring about peace.”
Not since the year 1334 had a
pope chosen the name John until that
name was chosen on October 28, 1958
by the newly elected Pontiff Angelo
Giuseppi Roncalli. But in all history
a greater number of popes have
the peoples of the entire world.
Like his two immediate prede-
cessors, Pope Pius XI and XII, Pope
John XXIII’s first words were of
peace. Immediately after his election
His Holiness urged world leaders to
heed the anguished plea of mankind
and turn their “monstrous” weapons
of war into instruments of a just
peace. Reiterated time and again was
his prayer “that the whole family of
peoples may live in concord, peace

N EVER before in the almost
2,000 year history of the Catholic
Church has its ancient ceremony of
coronation of its Supreme Pontiff
been brought to the attention of so
many people. Every means of com-
munication — television, radio and
the press — was used to its fullest
extent to carry to the public the
scenes and sounds of the coronation.
In strictest fact it can be said that
the Holy Father was crowned before

chosen John than any other name.
The name John stands out
prominently in the history of the
papacy. John I was a native of Tus-
cany, who came to the papal throne
in the year 523. The custom of as-
suming a new name on election to
the papacy began with Pope John II
in the year 533 and has continued
ever since. And since the election of
Pope John X in the year 914 all the
