Friends acquaintances mourn Adamson's death
deaths
Friends and associates of
retired 2nd Judicial District
Judge John Robert (Bob) Ad-
amson mourned his passing on
Saturday.
Dwight Phifer, who now sits
on the 2nd Judicial District
Court bench, said "Cherokee
County haslost a great man. He
was my mentor both in private
practice and as a judge."
When Judge Phifer entered
law practice it was with Judge
Adamson as a partner.
Judge Phifer continued, "Bob's
primary goal in practicing law
and being a judge as well as all
other areas of his life was to be

Adamson wasborn Jan. 4,1930,
in Mildred. He died in Tyler on
April 23.
Judge Adamson graduated
from Jacksonville High School
in 1947, Lon Morris College in
1949, receivedhis BB Afrom the
University of Texasin 1952 and
MBAin 1953. He served in the
U. S. Army. After completing
his LLB from the University
of Texas Law School in 1959,
he returned to Jacksonville to
open a general law practice.
During those early days, he also
taught business law classes at
Jacksonville College. In 1963,
he became assistant U.S. At-
torney for the Eastern District
of Texas, apositionhe held until
1969 when he joined the law
firm of Box, Jones and Adamson
in Jacksonville, where he prac-
tieedlaw until 1973. In 1979, the
firm of Adamson and Phifer was
estabhshed and continued until
1985when it became the firm of
Adamson, Phifer and Richards.
In 1991 he was appointed 2nd
Judicial District Court judge
by Gov. Ann Richards where
he served until his retirement
in 2000. He continued to serve
by assignment as a senior
district judge through 2009.
He also taught business law
courses at Lon Morris College
for several semesters after his
retirement.
He wasa member of the Jack-
sonville Industrial Foundation,
director of the Jacksonville
Chamber of Commerce and
member of the Rusk Indus-
trial Foundation. He was a
former city judge: past presi-
dent of the Cherokee County
ethical in all things. I will miss
him and his guidance."
Another young lawyer he
took under his wings was Ricky
Richards.
"He was my friend, mentor
andpartner and I will miss him
dearly," Mr. Richards said. He
praised Judge Adamson "for
the time I spent in his office
as a young attorney. We were
partners and I admired him.
Everyone admired him, mem-
bers of the bar and everyone in
the community."
Judge Bascom Bentley III,
who served as 369th District
Judge with Judge Adamson said
Judge Adamson was a good and
decent man who loved Cherokee
County."
Judge Bentley is a Republi-
can and Judge Adamson was a
Democrat, "Although we were
on opposite sides politically,
I respected him and knew he
was always a good man and
honorable. He will certainly be
missed."
Fairy Grigory, who served as
county clerk during the days
Judge Adamson was Demo-
cratic chairman spoke highly of
his time in that position.
"He was faithful to do a good
job, just like he was in every
other endeavor in his life. He
loved the Democratic Party
and being chairman. I enjoyed
the time we had working to-
gether. Cherokee County will
miss Bob."
Now County Clerk Laverné
Lusksaid, "Judge Adamson was
Democratic chairman when I
started working elections. He
alwayshadtimeto stop andvisit
with you. He was a fine per son.
After he retired he would come
to our office to just check on
us. He would take time to slop
and ask about your family. The
last time I visited with him we
talked about our grandchildren.

a 32nd degree Mason.
He volunteered at the HOPE
Center and drove the HOPE
van on a regular basis. For
many years before entering
the judiciary, he served as
chairman of the Cherokee
County Democratic Party and
was a delegate from the Third
Senatorial District of Texas to
the 1984 Democratic National
Convention. He was a member
of the J acksonville FirstPresby-
terian Church where he served
as elder, deacon, choir member
and church school teacher. He
also served on the Permanent
Judicial Commission of Grace
Presbytery. Hewasprecededin
death by his parents, James V.
and Mattie I. Adamson: sister,
Dessa Mae Moss: two brotheis,
Thurston and Ray Adamson:
and three sisters-in-law, Kath-
ryn Chatfield, Minerva Bassett,
and Anna Ruth Beall.
He is survived by his wife of
54 years, Dr. Mary Alice Bone
Adamson of Jacksonville: two
sons and a daughter-in-law,
John Robert Jr. and Cheryl
Adamson of Nacogdoches and
JamesB. Adamson of Jackson-
ville; granddaughter, Mattie E.
Adamson of Grapevine: grand-
son, John Robert Adamson
III of San Antonio: a sister,

Newburnlll, 63, of Jacksonville,
was at 4 p.m. Saturday in the
Autry Funeral Home chapel
with Rev. Barnwell Anderson
and Rev. Hal Brunson officiat-
ing. Burial was in Still Waters
Memorial Gardens, .Mr. New-
burn died April 21. He wasborn
Oct. 10, 1946, in Jacksonville.
He wasa deacon and member
of Tabernacle Baptist Church,
CEO of Newburn Health Ser-
vices and a member of Grand
Lodgeof Texas. He servedinthe
Army in Vietnam from 1967-68
in the 101st Airborne. He made
one, tour with Five Special
ForcesGroup, GreenBeretS. He
attended Jacksonville College,
University of Texas at Austin,
and Baptist Theological Semi-
nary in Jacksonville.
He was preceded in death

Burial will follow in the Old
Palestine Cemetery.
Mr. Foster died Saturday in
Lufkin. He was born Sept. 19,
1928, in Alto to Nesbitt E. and
Rosa Neely Foster. He grew up
in the Primrose Community
and graduated from Alto High
School in 1946. He was co-cap-
tain of the Yellowj acket football
team his sémor year. He served
in the Army of occupation in
Japan. After returning to the
states he went to Pineywoods
Business College and then to
work at the Southern Pacific
Railroadin Lufkin. While work-
ing there, he was sent to the
small town of Logansport, La.
where a young telephone opera -
tor was given the job of waking
him at his hotel room. Three
months later they were mar-
ried. To this union wasbornfour
children, Gail, Chuck, Bobby
and Allen. After several years

CHARLES H. FOSTER
Charles went to work for the
TSE Railroad in Diboll. At the
time of his retirement he held
the position of vice-president
and general manager. While
a member at Central Baptist
Church in Lufkin, he taught
Sunday school, had a bus route,
sang in the choir and served as
the church treasurer for many
years,
Later he j oined Harmony Hill
Baptist and served as a Sun-
day school teacher, assistant
treasurer, and deacon as well
as serving on various church
committee's. At the time of
his death he was a member of
the Memorial Baptist Church
in Rusk. He was a member of
the Lufkin Noon Kiwanis and
worked on numerous projects
including animal exhibits at the
Ellen Trout Zoo and expanding
the Girl Scout Hut in Chamber's
Park whichis now the Boy Scout
Troop 518 scout hut. He moved
to Alto in 2001. After the death
of his son, Robert and his wife,
Blythe, Charles and his wife,
Mary, reared their two sons. Mr.
Foster wasprecededin death by

83, of Jacksonville died in
Tyler Sunday. Her funeral will

Cemetery.Ms. Templeton
was born June 14, 1926, in
Jacksonville to Robert David
and Floy Wall Templeton.
