acksonv lie's retail sales lag 10.57% below
2009's year-to-date totals; Rusk is up 10.6%
Seventy-five percent of
all retail purchases made
in Cherokee County are
bought inside the city limits
of Jacksonville, with Wal-
mart anchoring the sales
tax base.
In the most recent report
from State Comptroller Su-
san Combs, Jacksonville's
sales tax is lagging when
compared to 2009. For pur-
chases made during April
and taxes remitted to the
comptroller's office in May,
Jacksonville was down by
21.89 percent. In the year-
to-date column, the sales
are down 10.57 percent.
Rusk, on the other hand,
has seen higher sales taxre-
turns due primarily to beer
and wine sales which first
began in August 2009.
For thefirst five months of
the year. Rusk's sales taxes
are up by 10.48 percent.
Por the month, the city's
retail sales are up by 11.59
percent.
Some of the smaller cities
in Cherokee County have
seen wide swings in sales
tax rebates. Alto, for ex-
ample is up 11.27 percent
year-to-date; New Summer-
field is up 2.38 percent.
However, Wells leads the
county with the biggest loss
at -28.76, follweclby Cuney
with -26.32 in the year-to-
date column.
Statewide, retail sales
totaled approximately $1.7
billion, which is up by a
narrow one-tenth of one
percent when compared to
May 2009.
Comptroller Combsthinks
the state has "hit bottom"
and the economy is on the
way up.

Support needed for Rusk's Ladies Auxiliary
LURLENE BOWDEN
Rush
Wally Walker's 93-years-
young mother made a pro-
found statement at the May
31 Memorial Day Service on
the square. She said, "One
more word and I am going
to cry."
I assured her she would
really weep because this was
the last such event for the
Laches Auxiliary to the VFW
Post 3406 of Rusk. No officers
had been elected, attendance
was poor and paper work for
closing the chapter had been
mailed. All that was needed
was a final vote to close the
chapter.
God answers prayers, be-
cause on June 1 a group of
dedicated ladies voted in a
new slate of officers and the
charter was saved. Applica-
tions for new members were
taken that night too.
The Lache s Auxiliary to the
VFW Post 3406 carries a "big
torch of light" for freedom in
Cherokee County. Members
support cancer research,
the National Home for the
orphans of slain service men
and women and many other
national service programs.
A favorite local event is the
annual veterans memora-
bilia display featuring items
from the Civil War to present
day Iraq and Afghanistan for
hundreds of county school
children to view. Veterans
and ladies speak to the
classes attending this week
oflearning about our nation's
history.
Scholarships are given by
the organization for Patriot's
Pen, "Voice of Democracy''
and "Patriotic Art'*' yearly.
Cakes are sent to the schools
for teacher appreciation
and are served at the state
hospital birthday party for
patients. Many clothing
items are given to local
charity organizations in our
county.
There are alsoprogramsfor
writing and sending supplies
to our men and women in the
military. These are just a
few of the laches auxiliary's
works.
The dying breed of our na-
tion's heroes is increasing.
The harvest is great, but the
workers are few.
We ask you to join our aux-
iliary. One can be eligible by
a spouse or family member. I
will get an apphcation for any
lacly. The 1)1)21 1 discharge
paper is needed. We can help
you find if .
Please stand up and join us
in the Rusk Laches Auxiliary
Post 3406 to the Veterans of
Foreign Wars. We need your
support.

New organization to help Texas State Railroad
j
JOHN B. PRICE
Jacksonville
A non-profit organization
is being formed to encourage,
enable and facilitate the use
of the Texas State Railroad
for the purposes of educa-
tion and preservation of the
r ailroad s infra structure and
Surrounds.
Members of the organiza-
tion, the Texas State Rail-
road Society, are to receive a
membership card, a regular
newsletter, a calendar, and
the satisfaction of support-
ing a very worthy cause.
Membership subscriptions
and donations are to be used
to support activities that en-
hance the experience of rail-
roading in the last century,
as well as the appreciation
of the beauty of the Piney
Woods of East Texas,
Members will also be
encouraged to volunteer.
Volunteering can take many
forms to suit the wishes and
talents of the individual,
such as, but not restricted
to, the following:
• Hosts or greeters at lo-
cal events
• Tour guides on TSRR
property
• Assistants for Society
administration and com-
munication
• Design and publication
of literature
• Restoration of railroad
equipment.
The society is very much in
its infancy, but it will have
particular appeal to students
of local history, nature lovers
and railfans alike.
Help is needed for us to
develop rapidly and enhance
the experiences of the visitor
to East Texas as well as its
residents.
If the society's aims have
any appeal, please contact
the Texas State Railroad
Society for further details,
You may clo so by writing
to the Texas State Railroad
Society, P.O. Box 2190,
