Judge admonishes spectators
for clapping, cheering as jury's
ruling is announced
Ajury returned a "not guilty'' verdict Friday
in a capital murder trial of a man accused of
killing an 18-month-old baby,
The jury deliberated almost five hours be-
fore returning the verdict around 3:55 p.m.
that Jamie Black shire was not guilty.
Judge Bascom Bentlesy presided over the
trial in the 369th court.
The Cherokeean Herald spoke with several
jurors following the disposition of the case.
Several praised Assistant District Attorney
Rachel Palion for her work but said the
investigation presented by the Jacksonville
Police Department did not contain enough
evidence to warrant a conviction.
Mr. Blackshire, 28, was accused of beating
to death Michael Alexander, 18 months old,
on Dec. 16, 2003. Michael was the sonofMr.
Blackshire's girlfriend, Ashley Alexander.
The case was given to the district attor-
ney by Lt. John Page of the Jacksonville's
Criminal Investigative Division in 2005. Lt.
Page is now Jacksonville Police Department
Assistant Chief.
Mr. Blackshire was indicted by a grand
jury in the summer 2009.
Testifying in the case was psychologist
Nikolas Kombos, who said, "Mr. Blackshire
told me he wa s hearing voice s on a daily ba sis,
telhng him to 'kill himself or kill someone
else.'"
Dr. Joni McClain testified that she had
been involved in the child's autopsy as a
Dallas County medical examiner. She said,
"There was evidence of blunt forcé injuries.
The child's right forehead between the eye-
brow and hairline showed circular contu-
sion. Also, there was hemorrhaging above
the left ear and underneath the skin in the
torso region. Michael also suffered a skull
fracture, extensive bruising to the abdomen,
lacerations to the spleen and left lung and
fractured ribs."
Prior torea ding the ver diet, Judge Ba seo m
Bentley III warned the audience against
showing any sign of emotion¡ However, after
Foreman T.J. Hunter read the not guilty
ven lief , the audience clapped, cheered and
shouted.
"I can't believe you would clap over the
death of a child,'' he admonished the crowd.
"Someone killed that baby, and I think that
someoneis sitting here. God help him." Judge
Bentley said.
The jury consisted of six women and six
men.
Following the trial. Judge Bentley met
