•Touching evidences of the deep
affection of the peasants were given at
many place*. I recall one in particu-
lar. The emperor Slept at a monastery
near Kremenchug Early in the morn-
ing he went out for a walk, attended
only by an aid* de camp, thinkng to
pass unnoticed through the village.
But he peasants at once recognised him.
and the news of his presence spread
like wildfire. Hundreds of peasants
soon collected, forming a devoted body-
guard. The emperor talked to them in
simple language, telling them that
their little mother Russia had need of
her sons In the Far East.
"The oldest of the peasants alone
ventured to reply. It being contrary to
the patriarchial custom of village lifa
fer the young to raise their voices in
matters of moment. He sald:
" You are sunlight: show us the way
and we will follow. Our lives and all
we have are yours.”*

St. Petersburg, May 21, 11:30 p. m.—
It is reported that Foreign Minister
Lamsdorff has received a message from
the Russian conanl at Chefoo saying that
the Japanese haye made a land attack
on Port Arthur and that in doing so they '
lost 15,000 men killed or wounded. The
Russian loss is placed at 3.000 men. The
nltimate outeomeof the fighting is not
stated.
There was an explosion today on board
the battleship Orel at < Tons tad t and
that ten stokers were killed. The vessel
the corespondent says, was damage*!
and it will take weeks to effeet repairs.
The explosion according to the dispatch
was the result of an accumulation of gas
in the bunkers.
An investigation made by the authori-
ties into the recent attempts to destroy
some vessels of the Baltic fleet at Cron-
stadt has resulted in the arrest of four
Japanese spies who seem to have es-
caped detection by wearing the uniform
of naval cadets, thus obtaining admis-
alon to the navy yard and access to the
ships without difficulty. It is believed
they are also responsible for the' fire
started some time ago near the naval
magazine and for the opening of the sea
valves of the Orel. The a thorities here
think the Japanese h ve been harbored
by anarchists.
St. Petersburg, May 23, 4:3 P m.—

ashore recently, in a fog on the rocks
at Vladivostok, caused her to be blown
up, is confirmed.
The guns of the Bogatyr were removed
before she was destroyed. No oss Of
