The appenrunee
William Crowell. There had been a
constant wrangle between the Ran An-
tonio men and the umprre almost from
the first ball pitched, but in the fifth
inning it reached the climax While
San Autonio was in the field Gibbs
walked up to Crowell and pushed him
around and then took two punches at
him, the first, a straight left to the
face, felt • short; the second, a right
swing, ws ducked by Crowell The
other players then interfered. The po-
lice went on the field and placed the
pugnacious ball player under arrest, but
showed him to finish the game. When
Ren Aatonio eame in for its last inning
Gibbs slipped out the back gate and
made tracks for town, followed by a
mob of boys.
As to the cause of th® trouble there
are two versions. The Han Antonio
men claim that Crowell called Gibbs a
vile name. Crowell denies this, and
stated that the entire San Antonio team
had abused him shamefully, and that
the assault by Gibbs was unprovoked
on his part.
After the game was over Manager
Riehy of tbe local team swore out a
warrant for Gibbs' arrest, and he was
taken into custody by the police and
held at the police station Mr. Kielly
wishes every one to understand that
he will not stand for rowdyism by ball
players in the future..and any player
acting in a disorderly manner will at
once be handed over to the police.
Many ladies attend the ball games in
Houston and Mr. Rielly is determined
to prevent a recurrence of such scenes
as took place today.
The game was without other exciting
incidents, and was almost devoid of in-
terst. Houston outclassed Han An- i
tonio and the Mustangs backed over the
dump by the score of 6 to 0.
