Feathered Flock Skipper Hal
Van Pelt and Mike Dooley each
banged out a pair of safeties to
spark the offensive play of the
Circus town representatives.
Sweatt struck out five and gave
un singles to only Tassin and
catcher Joe Neidson.
Exciting Game
The second tussle was by far
the most exciting collision of the
two teams, for it was in that fra-
cas that the Owls staged their
whirl-wind finish to rub out a
three-point deficit and take the
victory.

Wichita Falls tied it up in the
third, when Ferullo walked, went
to second on a ground out and
scored on Bob Phillips one-shot
to left.
Action calmed down after that,
but suddenly erupted in the sev-
enth, when Gigli tripled into left
field and scored on Phillip’s sec-
ond single of the night. Phillips
trotted across the platter ahead
of Cecil McClung, who picked out
a Gleason slant and sent it sail-
ing over the left field fence 340
feet away. That big blow gave
the Spudders two more runs and
ran the score to 4 to 1 in their
favor.
The way Ferullo had been
pitching gave indication that
the three-run margin would be
enough, however, Owl bats sud-
denly came to life in the bottom
of the eighth inning and tied up
the score.

a single and stopped at third on

Last night, for instance, Hal
used the right pitcher—Bob Up-
ton—at the right time to save
that final game and he also
crossed up the Wichita Falls
Spudders when he told Catcher
Mike Dooley to bunt in that
game-winning run.
©INFIELD BACK
The Spudders had previously
walked Roy Sanner to load the
bases with one man away when
Dooley stepped up to the plate.
The Spudders, instead of play-
ing close in an effort to make
a play at home plate, moved
back as if in a position to try
for a double play.
Quick Van, seeing the situa-
tion, called for Dooley to bunt
and the Owl catcher laid down
a perfect one to the right of I
the pitcher that brought home I
the winning run. The bunt was
so good in fact that Mike beat
it out for a base hit and helped
his average just that much
more.

For six innings Owl Pitcher Jim
Gleason and Spudder ace, Carmen
Ferullo, hooked up in a tight
pitcher’s duel, but the roof caved
in on Gleason in the seventh and
the walls came tumbling down
on Ferullo in the eighth.
Gainesville scored the first run
in the initial inning, as Al Joe
Hunt reached third base on a wild
throw by Short Stop Don Gigli
and scored on Wiley Moore’s long
fly into right field.

with zeal for the occasion. Of
course many of those fans from
the aforementioned communi-
ties were already ardent follow-
ers. Sam Pedigo of Saint Jo is '
one of the most faithful back-
ers of the Owls in the country
and brings several people with
him each time he takes his seat
behind home plate.
We were glad to see the large
crowd of visitors, for they
helped add to the 692 paid at-
tendance. And, for our money,
that was a good crowd consid-
ering that the Owls have just
a two-game series. Saturday,
Sunday and Monday will find the
Hooters in Texarkana and Tues-
day and Wednesday will see them
in Sherman. Next Thursday the
locals return to Locke field for
the opening of a series with Tex-
arkana.
Last night’s first game found
19-year old Sweatt pitching for
the first time in 18 days. He had
been suffering from a sprained
ankle, but gave no evidence of
the injury last night, as he lashed
the Spudders with only two sin-
gles.
He had a shutout working until
the sixth, when two walks and
an Owl error combined to give
the visitors their lone tally.
The Owls, on the other hand,
gave Wichita Falls hurler, Irv
Tassin, a good going over, as they
racked out seven hits to score

Playing before 692 paid custo-

they are by far the greatest team
to ever play in the spangles of
the Owls and one of the finest
outfits ever seen in the Big State
league, as they won the double
header.
Billy Sweatt’s two-hit job in
the abbreviated seven-inning first
game gave the Birds their 6-1
win, while a last ditch rally by
Gainesville gave them a thrilling
5-4 triumph in the second fiasco.

The Big State league broke out
in a rash of double-headers last
night but even with the added
action the clubs couldn’t cut into
the lead held by the high-flying
Gainesville Owls.
Sherman-Denison, playing in
the only single game of the night,
was the only club to make head-

ana while Temple was losing a
double-header to Austin to take
over the fourth place. The twins

light for the first division spot.
Sherman-Denison beat Tex-

pitching of Vince Amor. Gaines-
ville, Austin and Waco swept the
twin-bills.
Gainesville beat Wichita Falls
6-1 and 5-4; Austin humbled
Temple 2-1 and 11-3, and Waco
beat Tyler by identical scores,
8-2 in each game.
Amor pitched no-hit baseball
for eight innings before giving up
the lone hit, a drive back through

GOOD GAMES
People attending the Wednes-
day games at Locke field certain-
ly got their money’s worth, for a
pair of fine contests were reeled
off for their benefit. Billy Sweatt
notched his sixth win of the sea-
son for the Owls in the first game
and a pulse-quickening last ditch
rally captured the win the second
game for the Hooters.
We’d like to take time right here-
to say that we have great faith
in Hal Van Pelt as a manager.
Admittedly he has some great
material, but his strategy, and
handling of that material is one
of the prime factors in the four
and a half game lead boasted by
the Feathered Flock.

IMPORTANT DECISION to BE MADE ABOUT OWLS TODAY
+• W11 Class B baseball continue in Gainesville? That is a ques-
tion that many local fans have been asking for the past week and
it is one that will be answered today.
,e. Several meetings, between the Owl board of directors, Dallas
o1-icla.s and Big State league president, Howard Green, have taken
place during the past week and all have been somewhat shrouded
in secrecy.
Purpose of the meetings was to decide the fate of baseball in
-aines V1e. That fate will be announced at noon today, following a
fina. and decisive gathering of all of the officials involved.
Elsewhere in the paper today you will be able to see the de-
cision that was made, but at the time of this writing we were
completely in the dark as to what the outcome might be Oh of
course we have heard rumors—good and bad—but we have Hong
since learned to put little stock in sayings that go around from
person to person.
We only hope that a settlement can be reached by which the
Owls will remian in Gainesville for at least the remainder of
this 1951 season. ------------:_____________
