signed her position as executive
secretary of the Bastrop Chapter,
American Red Cross, and has ac-
cepted an appointment in the
Home Service Dept, of the Bexar
County chapter, with headquarters
in San Antonio. She will take up
her new duties August 1.
Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Jarmon and
Mrs. A. Nyman and
Corps, San Antonio, was a week-
end visitor with his parents, Mr.
and Mrs. T. B. Sharp.
Mrs. Dewey Bailey. Robstown,
was the week-end guest of her
mother, Mrs. Jim Stanfield who
accompanied her home Monday to
visit a while.
Lucille and Mary Emma Lawhon
of Corpus Christi, are here this
week visiting their mother, Mrs.
.S. O. Byrd and sister, Wilma Law-
hon and helping them get ready to
move to Corpus where Mrs. Byrd
has purchased a home.
W. D. House has accepted a
position in the local postoffice,
taking the place of Willard Kun-
kel, who is leaving to enter .bus-
iness school in Tyler.
Mrs. J. F. Metcalfe and Bobby
have returned from Pleasanton,
where they went to visit Mr. and
Mrs. Joseph F. Metcalfe, Jr and to
der of the summer with them.
Miss Eva Mae Walker spent the
week-end at her home'in the Mt.
Pleasant community.
Claiborne Carter has returned
to New Orleans, La. ,where he is
majoring in Accounting in Tulane
University, after a visit with his
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charley
Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Scott and
son, Earl, of Philipp, Texas, were
guests of his parents, Mr. and Mrs.
John Scott of Young’s Prairie,
and of his sister and her husband.
Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Culp of New
Sweden, for several days last week.
Week-end guests of Mr. and
Mrs. John Kunkel were Mr. and
Mrs. Jim Byrum and Mr. and Mrs.
August 14, V-J Day celebration
will be a big affair and they hope
to have everyone in this vicinity
here for the rodeo that evening to
celebrate. Night shows only this
time and a colorful parade, at 6:30
p. m. on Main street will precede
the performance of the first night’s
show. A queen will be crowned
and there will be plenty rodeo
thrills in the arena.
More details relative to the
queen’s race, location of rodeo etc.
will be given next week so watch

never in Elgin has been introduc-
ed here by Joe I. Dildy in Joe’s

Mrs. Dan Ridings has been
moved from the hospital to her
home, 311 Jupiter Street, San An-
tonio, Texas, and is reported doing
fine.

ton came here Friday to attend
the funeral of Mr. M. M. Parks,
returning to their several homes

Mr. and Mrs. George W. Haner
of Alice arrived last Wednesday
and Mr. Haner and good friend,
Chester Swenson, went to Bonham
to attend the first annual reunion
of Jones Field instructors, held
Thursday through Sunday at Lake
Fannin Ranch. Mrs. Haner re-
mained in'Elgin to visit with Mrs.
Swenson during their absence.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles H. From-
me have returned from their
honeymoon and are pleasantly
located in an apartment in the
home of Mr. and Mrs. Will Gage.

Houston today .to be with him.
Mr. and Mrs. J. K. Boone and
son J. K., Jr. have returned to
Elgin from Dallas and have an
apartment with Mr. and Mrs. R.
G. Meyers, in south Elgin.
Mrs. W. E. Wood and Miss Nell
Owens have recently returned
from a trip to Temple and while
there they made a trip to Carls-
bad Cavern, N. M. in company
with Mrs. G. V. Brindley and Miss
Nora Crossland.

Miss Beatrice Carnline left at
the week-end for a vacation trip to
Kansas to visit with her sister
and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Bunch.
Mrs. Bunch will be remembered as
the former Miss Tommye Carnline.
Mrs. W. H. Carter, Austin, was
in Elgin Saturday to vote and at-
tend to other business. Miss Mary
Beth Carter, who has been vaca-
tioning with_her mother in Aus-
tin, left Saturday for Chicago to
attend University of Chicago for a
5-weeks course in Household

Rector of Holland, who arrived
Monday afternoon.
Mr. and Mrs. Jesse West. Weir,
are in Elgin while Mrs. West is
recuperating following an opera-
tion.
Mrs. John W. Caudill and child-
ren, Lucy and John left Monday
W. G. Stowe was a patient in
Fleming several days following
an auto accident Sunday morn-
ing in which he suffered two
pulled ligaments in his back, three
broken'ribs and fractured collar
bone, when his car overturned on
the cutoff between highway 95
and old highway 20, north of
town. Three companions in the
car were reported as receiving
only minor injuries.
Mr. and Mrs. Jim Mogonye and
Emil Ray motored to Granger
Friday to be with Mrs. Mogonye’s
sister, Mrs. Don Arrowsmith, who,
with her children will spend a
months vacation in Texas, part of
it here in the Jim Mogonye home.
Mrs. Arrowsmith is from Rivera,
California.
Hackberry Johnson, widely
known in rodeo circles, who has
played Elgin to sell-out crowds,
is planning another big 2-day
show for week after next. He is
now working with his son, J. W.
Johnson, just home after serving
as a Seabee in the navy and they
will give the public some fine en-

Friends of Mr. Carl Sellstrom
will be glad to learn he was able
to return home from the hospital

strength nicely. Among his visi-

remaining until Tuesday.
Eugene Ward left Sunday morn-
ing for Houston, where he entered
Memorial hospital to undergo
major surgery August 1st, at 1:30
p. m. His son William Eugene.
and son, Bill, of Bayonne, N. J.,
are guests of Mrs. Edgar Ballard.
Bill was stationed at Camp Swift
while in the army and visited often
in the Ballard home during his
stay there.
Mrs. S. O. Byrd and daughter,
Wilma Lawhon will leave next
week for Corpus Christi to join
Lucille and Mary Emma, who are
already there and have employ-
ment. Their many friends regret
to see them eave Elgin but wish
them happiness and success in
their new home.

sons, Pat and Ike, of San Benito,
spent Monday with Mr. and Mrs. 8
