WHY are you a Christian? Now many of you will inevitably
respond with HOW you became a Christian. But, there are
only two possible answers, God chose you or the most com-
monly held belief, Christ provided the means but, one
needs to make a choice for Him. So either He chose you or
you chose Him. Now, file your answer away for a second and
let me ask you a second question, when Christ died on the
cross did this act have a “specific” purpose or did it have a
“potential” purpose? Now, if your answer from the first
question was God chose you, then you “must” say Christ’s
death had a “specific” purpose, which was too “save” those
whom God had chosen and given to Christ (Jn. 6:37 &
17:24). Think about it, for if He had “chosen” you “specifi-
cally”, He would have “specifically” provided for you, His
chosen. Now, if you answered the first question with the
most commonly held belief, you “must” answer the second
question that Christ’s death was “potential” in purpose.
After all you would say people will or will not choose there-
fore; a “potential” is a necessity initiated by the choice.
Jesus’ last words on the cross were “It is finished” (Jn.
19:30), what did He mean? Did He mean, this death just re-
deemed all those “whom the Father had given to me (His
chosen)”, or did He mean, well I am finished with my part,
now it is up to everyone else to make a choice. In other
words, if His death was “specific”, if it accomplished a spe-
cific goal for a specific people, that very act “saved”. But,
if His death was “potential”, it accomplished nothing but,
making all mankind “savable”
Well, that is silly you say, but most of us hold this view,
we just never heard it worded as such. Do we really believe
that he made everyone “savable”, and all we need to do is”
cash in our account/get our ticket” in a manner of speaking
so we can move from the state of “savable” to “saved”. Who
then is taking the credit for our salvation with this view?
We are. We are ultimately saying “Our choice saves” How
else are we able to answer WHY we are Christian to the
most commonly held belief? Where does this theology
stem from? Answer: Man. It is a man centered theology not
a God centered theology. Well, that doesn’t sound like God
is fair. Christ had to die for everybody, what kind of God
chooses and saves some; He must “offer” salvation to all?
Let’s flip the question, is God obligated to save anyone?
Well how about (Jn. 3:16)? Well, the opening means “This
is how God loved the world”. What world is this? Is this the
same world Jesus said in (Jn. 17:9) He “wasn’t” praying for?
So He is saving a world He isn’t praying for? John has ten
uses for the word “world”, and in (Jn. 3:17) the use of the
word “world” is found three times and this refers to the
elect, God’s chosen.
Will heaven be full of people saying “I am glad I was
smart enough, sensitive enough, discerning enough to
make the right choice in order to be here” or will His peo-
ple be saying “Thank you Lord for choosing not to leave me
in my own selfish, sinful thinking” The Bible says “For by
grace you have been saved through faith, why? so that no
one may boast” (Eph. 2:8-10), if your answer to WHY you’re
a Christian was anything apart from God alone choosing
you, your guilty of boasting, your theology is man centered.
Do you think Christ is a dice tossing, finger crossing Savior,
hoping His death had accomplished some “potential” pur-
pose which could only be effective by the choice of sinful
God hating men? Jesus’ death NEVER made anyone “sav-
able”, it “saved”, it was “finished” there, and God saved
His chosen there, on that cross. Let those who have ears
hear.
