Dear Editor,
Public libraries cultivate
literacy, learning and imag-
ination. They are the one
place in the community
that any person can visit to
use the internet, research
any topic of their choosing,
or travel to anywhere in
the world through reading.
Libraries serve as a critical
public resource for career
and job skills information
and training, especially
during these tough eco-
nomic times.
Elgin Public Library is a
vital community resource
and one that deserves
every bit of support we can
give it.

the shelter is
doing well and
will continue to
make improve-
ments. We
have cleaned
the facility,
painted inside
cleaned drains, --------
repaired the large
heaters, rebuilt 110 pul-
leys for the kennel doors,
made new kennel doors,
ordered new signage, and
numerous other repairs.
All of this has been done
with the help of our su-
perb Precinct 4 County
Crew, Lenny Burnett
from the Bastrop County
General Services Depart-
ment, and Joe Parten
and Terry Fowler from
the Elgin Public Works
Department. The shelter
parking lot was paved
last week with County
Precincts 1, 2, 3, and 4
contributing the funds to
make this possible and
Precinct 2 helping with
the paving process.
The Friends of the Bas-
trop County Volunteer
group donated a new
building to house food for
the animals. This group
also donated the building
for the “Cattery” which
provides a safe, clean,
stimulating environment
for our cats. We had
speakers installed in the
kennels to play classical
music during the day.
Studies have shown that
this helps calm the dogs.
We have purchased a new
washer and dryer so that
we can provide clean
blankets to our animals,
but the best news is that
animal adoption rates are
up.
Our animals are well-
ful to the Texas Book Festi-
val for awarding Elgin Pub-
lic Library a Literacy
Initiative grant. Because
of their funding, we are
able to provide our com-
munity with a part-time lit-
eracy co-ordinator and 23
Oxford Spanish/English
picture dictionaries for use
in our Dual Language
classes.
