Joe Russell has the respect of the whole community in
his sincere desire to do that which he believes is morally
right. His fight against the gambling interests of Texas is
to be commended and only with people of his character
and fearlessness can we root out evil of the gamblers in our
state.

Joo Russell is from a family that has been a part of the
church for many years and he has been raised in that atmo-
sphere. He is now a teacher of the high school young
people.
His personality of earnest sincerity is his greatest
asset. His desire to basically do the thing that is morally
and practically right makes him the kind of a man that is
desired in our political offices.

Joe Russell believes that we should give the youth of
our state the best educational opportunities that we can
possibly give them. He believes that we should have
teachers who are well prepared, and who are capable of
giving our youth the type of leadership they need and de-
serve, and he believes that our teachers should be paid a
salary comparable to the earnings of other professional
groups. I sincerely believe that a vote for Joe Russell will
be a vote for the cause of education in Texas.

FLOUR Jemima
By MARTHA COLE
CHICAGO, July 24 (A)—Tex-
ans were riled about not getting
a chance to register their “no”
on the Democratic platform at
the Convention hall early today.
They shouted, they waved
their hats and Nationl Commit-
teeman Wright MoroW shook
the state standard aloft. ■
But their fellow Texan, Speak-
er Sam Rayburn, declared the
platform was adopted by voice
vote and went on to the next
order of business without recog-
nizing them.
Some of the delegates huddled
after the convention session,
talking it over.
Gov. Shivers, leader of the
Texas delegation, had no com-
ment except that the Texans

UNHAPPY, UNSEATED MAVERICK — The expression of
former Rep. Maury Maverick of San Antonio, Tex., reflects
his sentiments as he is interviewed by newsmen after the
Democratic national convention credentials committee
voted 36-13 to seat the anti-Truman "regular" delegation
from Texas. Maverick headed the "loyalist" pro-Truman
group to the Chicago convention. Their application was
denied. Maverick said he was considering taking the case
to the convention floor.—(AP Wirephoto.)

Re-Elect
I personally believe in Joe Russell, first because of his
keen interest in the youth of our state as evidenced by his
work in the senate toward the best possible educational op-
portunities for our young people. He believes they should
have every encouragement and facility we can give to pre-
pare them for leadership in the days ahead.
I have known Joe Russell and his family since 1938 and
know them to be people of honesty and integrity. I admire
Joe for his game fight against the gamblinq interests of
Texas. If he had done nothing else (and he has a fine
record out of his first term) his game fight against the slot
machines alone should earn a second term for him.

voice vote in preference to the
contesting liberal group.
They waved goodbye to one
another at the Convention hall
in the afternoon—the liberals in
one corner of the balcony and
the conservatives down on the
floor. Some of the liberals said
they were going home.
Maury Maverick, a fighting
New Dealer from San Antonio,
claimed a moral victory.
“We forced Shivers to say he
would support the Democratic
party,” Maverick said.
But Shivers said in a state-
ment that the loyalty resolution
his delegation signed did not
bind any delegate to support
personally the Democratic nomi-
nee.
Folks At Home Wire
Shivers said the only promise
made was that delegates would
work to assure that tne names of
the Democratic nominees were
on the ballot in Texas in Novem-
ber as long as such a promise
didn’t contravene state laws or
state party instructions.
The Shivers group came to Chi-
cago saying they would not take
a pledge to support the nominees
of the Democratic party.
The governor received more
than 100 telegrams from folks
back home yesterday. He said all
but two or three congratulated
him. The others were agast the
stand his delegation took.
“This is a victory not for me—
not for the delegation,” Shivers
said in a statement. “It is a vic-
tory for the Texans who went to
their precinct conventions and
had the majority.”
The Shivers delegation is un-
instructed as to the presidential
nominee. But their preference for
Sen. Richard Russell is under-
stood.
Some of them appeared last
night — after their permanent
seating — wearing duck-billed
red, white and blue caps printed
with “Give Us Russell.”
They aren’t saying who is their
second choice. Ask them about
Gov. Adlai Stevenson of Illinois
and they will say they want to
know more about what he stands
for.

Rayburn Says
People Will Stay
With Democrats
CHICAGO (A)—The American
people won’t trade Democratic
party prosperity for Republican
promises this fall, says Speaker
of the House Sam Rayburn.
In a speech to the Democratic
convention last night Rayburn
stressed the don’t-change-horses-
in-midstream idea with which
the Democrats hope to win in
November.
“T h e Republican leadership
tells you that you ought to
change,” Rayburn said. “I sug-
gest that you treat this proposi-
tion with deep distrust.
“What they ask of you is a
modest request, from their point
of view. It is only that you trade
your new car for an old buggy;
swap your television set for a
magic Lantern; jump from the
bed into a strait-jacket of uncer-
tainty.”
Rayburn told the delegates the
GOP tried, after choosing Gen.
Dwight D. Eisenhower as its
presidential nominee, to. say a
new Republican party had been
born.
But he said: “The proof that
nothing has changed is clear . . .
It is the same old party with a
new candidate . . . The American
people are not going to trade
prosperity for promises.”
Rayburn made his speech in
accepting the convention’s per-
manent chairmanship.
Judge Woodley is

Judge Kenneth K. Woodley of
Austin, who is serving his third
year as a member of the com-
mission in aid of the Court of
Criminal Appeals of Texas, is a

bench in Saturday’s Democratic
primary, and he visited Gaines-
ville Thursday in the interest of
his candidacy.
The Texas Bar association has
voted 4,032 to 1,776 for Judge
Woodley over his opponent.
Judge Woodley was a school-
mate at the University of Texas
of Jerry S. Fowler, advertising

They met for the first.time in 30
years in The Register office this
morning.
