The Internal Revenue Service sent
most taxpayers their packets of in-
come tax forms back in January.
Besides a basic package of com-
monly used returns, you'll find a
37-page close-packed booklet of
how-to instructions, government
legalese in small type, including
seven pages of row upon row of
numbers — tax tables and sales tax
tables. It doesn't make easy reading.
Important tax law changes for
1983 are highlighted right inside the
front cover. For instance, casualty
loss deductions are now strictly
limited to losses above 10 percent of
adjusted gross income; you must
still subtract the first $100 on each
nonbusiness casualty or theft loss.
Deductions for medical and dental
costs are less generous, too: There's
a floor of 5 percent of adjusted gross
income that you must surpass
before medical and dental expenses
are deductible.
The 1040A form now includes
spaces where you can deduct IRA
payments and take credit for child
and dependent care expenses. Even
on the 1040EZ, the simplest form,
you can take some charitable deduc-
tions.

The genealogical workshop held
March 28 was the first of its kind to
take place in Boerne, comments
Merva Pankratz. “The young
Genealogical Society of Kendall
County can, rightfully, be proud of
its success.”
Attendance totalled 76, with
participants coming from Comfort,
New Braunfels, Utopia, Kerrville,
Leon Springs, Bandera, Hondo,
Kendalia, San Antonio, Fredericks-
burg, Marion, Rio Frio, as well as
from Boerne.
Guests were offered coffee,
cookies and coffee cake during the
half-hour registration period, which
preceded the three hour lecture by
Mrs. Phyllis Preece.
The lecture was devoted to
general genealogical research.
Preece drew on her many years of
experience to relate amusing and
interesting anecdotes and to give
valuable tips on research easily
overlooked by less knowledgeable
searchers. Floren Preece presided
over the afternoon session, which
was followed by a special group
session conducted by Mrs. Preece
on research in England.
“Valuable books were displayed,
covering research abroad as well as
in the United States. The many
volumes of the ‘Roots’ Cellar and
Computerized Family Files were
very popular revealing family
connections searched for by many of
