What did the Galilaean carpenter look like? Probably far dif-
ferent from the traditional paintings of an anemic depressed in-
dividual with hollow eyes.
This representative man must have been the very picture of
health; a visual inspiration to those whom he healed. His
carpenter work to the age of thirty was physically demanding,
well preparing him for his last three and one-half years. No one
challenged this lone tan and muscular figure of authority when,
with a band of cords in hand, he cleansed the temple of commer-
cial extortioners. He not only sounded like authority, he looked
the part; his disciples drew reassurance by his very presence.
Though there was no special beauty, this representative man
was uniquely well rounded in morals, spirituality and physical
stature! He wasn't personally violent, but his enemies wanted
the insurance of several men to bring about his arrest and exter-
mination.
He was socially active, often slept outdoors and enjoyed occa-
sional retreats on lake Galilee or solitude in silent places. This
man's man loved children, was considerate of the poor and
widows and had time for the infirm. He walked everywhere and
it was his “custom" to attend the synagogue.
However, the only picure God left us was a picture of words!
They do not detail the physical aspects of Jesus; only a sketch.
Thus, it is Jesus' person that we are to know. Everyone is
physically different, but each needs to adjust in likeness to
Jesus' person. If only we were as curious about that which really
matters! Yet, ignoring a study about him, we inquire "I wonder
what he looked like? — I don't know, but it took six hours of the
cross before he was silent and still.

The House Budget and Appropriations Committees on which I serve, as
well as other Committees in both the House and Senate have begun to review
the President’s recommendations in preparation for adopting a Budget Reso-
lution this Spring. As in other years, some of the budget proposals will
be accepted, others will be rejected, and many will be modified. During
these legislative deliberations the Congress will have the opportunity to hear
from all quarters regarding the President’s budget recommendations and
any alternative proposals originating in the Congress.
The President’s proposal for an aggregate freeze on spending at last
year’s level is consistent in its basic framework with proposals by many
in Congress for an across-the-board freeze on all spending programs.
Individual components of each of these proposals differ, primarily in the
approach taken with respect to the treatment of defense and domestic

Budget Day of Reckoning
Is At Hand
The President has now formally presented to the Congress his Budget
for Fiscal Year 1986 and the Congress has begun its annual task of review-
ing, analyzing, and making decisions with respect to each of the individual
programs and recommendations contained in the President’s Budget.
During this process the Congress must consider, as did the President,
several important objectives and constraints. First and foremost, the
nation’s fiscal house is seriously out of order and drastic actions are
required to reduce the unacceptably high federal budget deficits that have
been projected. The President, in my mind, received a clear mandate from
the American electorate that our fiscal problems should be resolved by
means other than increased taxes.
